Job Summary : The Director AMP Research Programs provides strategic leadership and shapes the long-term trajectory of the Alabama Mobility & Power (AMP) Center. Defines and advances AMP’s research agenda. Secures significant external funding. Oversees high-profile initiatives, including the planning, launch, and operation of the AMP Battery and Power Research Centers.

Additional Department Summary : Oversees direct planning, development, and execution of special projects, including the AMP Battery and Power Research Centers, as well as AMP’s workforce development portfolio. Manage the integration of these centers and programs into ongoing research and workforce development activities. Ensures workforce programs are integrated with AMP’s research agenda and respond to national talent needs in electrification and mobility. Initiates joint ventures, industry partnerships, and collaborative research projects. Translates long-term goals into actionable implementation plans. Strategic thinker and institutional leader with the ability to set vision, manage complex operations, and deliver measurable impact.

Provides high-level oversight of AMP’s operations, including budget stewardship, annual planning, capacity management, and compliance posture. Ensures audit readiness and accountability across all programs while driving efficiency and organizational excellence. Develops strategies to expand public-partnerships and strengthen AMP’s national reputation and networks.

Required Minimum Qualifications : Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, public policy, or a related field and six (6) years of experience; OR master's degree in engineering, business, public policy, or a related field and four (4) years of experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications : Must have a valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Skills and Knowledge : Proven ability to build and sustain partnerships with industry, government, and academia. Exceptional leadership, communication, and project management skills. Demonstrated success in securing funding through grants, contracts, and sponsorships, with experience leading large-scale collaborative initiatives. Strong background in strategic planning, research operations, and workforce development. Expertise in proposal development, budgeting, and financial management. Expertise in technology commercialization and translating research into applied solutions. Ability to oversee multiple concurrent initiatives while setting clear priorities.

Preferred Qualifications : Understanding of federal and state funding agencies (e.g., NSF, DOE, DOT). Strong industry network in transportation, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Experience leading interdisciplinary teams across multiple research domains. Track record of securing multimillion-dollar research or industry funding.
