Center For Biomedical Research Support Director

The Center for Biomedical Research Support (CBRS) is a collection of 10 service centers that operates under the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors and broadly supports the research community on campus and externally. CBRS serves a central role across all of campus to provide access to cutting-edge technology, expert advice, and centralized services. CBRS is comprised of core facilities including Biomedical Imaging, Bioinformatics, Biological Mass Spectrometry, Biomedical Research Computing, Cryo-EM imaging, Genome Sequencing, Microscopy / Flow Cytometry and Mouse Genetic Engineering. In addition, CBRS provides laboratory support in the forms of stockrooms, electronics repair, and external services drop boxes. The Deputy Executive Director serves the role of unifying operations and serving as a leader within CBRS as well as a connection to external offices and units outside of CBRS.

Purpose

Provide strategic vision, leadership, and management of the core facilities under Center for Biomedical Research Support (CBRS), including helping to maintain and strengthen the culture of collaboration and innovation within CBRS.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and guidance to CBRS core facility directors and managers, fostering effective leadership and operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with financial leadership in OVPR on strategic initiatives, financial reporting, and recapitalization requests.
  • Partner with OVPR leadership to develop and submit research proposals to secure funding for shared resources.
  • Oversee the rate review process for CBRS cores, including close collaboration with Research Core Facilities throughout the process.
  • Manage annual reporting that summarizes current progress and outlines future goals for CBRS core facilities. Develop and manage institutional subsidy request justifications.
  • Promote CBRS core facility activities internally and externally, serving as a representative of the program.
  • Collaborate with core facility directors and advisory committees to encourage input and coordination with internal entities, and to manage and expand services offered by each CBRS core.
  • Support strategic planning with core facility directors, including developing business models, reviewing service sustainability, and establishing strategies to increase internal and external funding.
  • Work with the Associate Vice President for Research Core Facilities and advisory committees to develop metrics for evaluating, assessing, and determining the future of existing CBRS cores.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in core facility administration or other similar large research organization.
  • Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in a relevant scientific discipline, such as biomedical or biochemical sciences, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with a track record of successfully collaborating with researchers and administration across disciplines and organizational levels.
  • Ability to operate efficiently and adaptively in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment.
  • Experience managing financial budgets for a core research facility.
  • Skilled in writing funding proposals.
  • Experience supervising staff, with demonstrated success in mentoring and fostering leadership development.
  • Familiarity with the operational needs of shared research resources and technologies.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Over 5 years' experience in core facility administration
  • 5 years' experience working with financial budgets of a multi-unit center.
  • 5 years' experience writing successfully funded proposals.
  • Salary Range

    $150,000 + commensurate with experience
