Position Title : Assistant Maintenance Manager
Reports To : Maintenance Manager
Location : Orange County Area, CA
Position Summary
The Assistant Maintenance Manager supports the Maintenance Manager in overseeing preventive and corrective maintenance within an industrial food manufacturing facility. This position combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities to ensure equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and maintain compliance with all safety, food safety, and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have experience in food manufacturing, preferably pasta or frozen food production and strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the Maintenance Manager in enforcing plant safety policies for maintenance employees and contractors.
- Oversee daily maintenance activities to ensure safety, timeliness, and efficiency.
- Repair, adjust, and maintain production equipment to ensure continuous operation and product consistency.
- Conduct and participate in safety meetings and training sessions.
- Execute preventive maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and repairs per CMMS schedules.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service procedures.
- Perform line changeovers and assist production teams during product transitions.
- Provide technical guidance to maintenance mechanics and troubleshoot complex issues.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain machinery including automatic dough cylinders and sheeters, inline water cookers and coolers, freezing spirals, Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines, and packaging equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct diagnostic tests and operational checks using specialized tools.
- Ensure adherence to lockout / tagout, PPE, and other OSHA safety protocols.
- Promptly address any unsafe conditions and support a proactive safety culture.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of maintenance experience in food manufacturing or industrial production.Strong technical expertise in mechanical and electrical systems.Experience with pasta or frozen food processing equipment (sheeters, cookers, freezers, packaging).Supervisory or lead experience managing small maintenance teams.Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.Physically able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in cold or hot environments.Welding or fabrication knowledge preferred.Flexible schedule, including weekends or nights when needed.Technical Skills
Mechanical Skills (Food Processing Focus) :Maintenance and repair of conveyors, mixers, slicers, blenders, and packaging machines.Understanding of sanitary equipment design and clean-in-place (CIP) systems.Troubleshooting of hydraulic and pneumatic systems (valves, actuators, air lines).Performing product and packaging changeovers and calibrations.Preventive maintenance and root cause analysis to minimize downtime.Electrical & Controls :Troubleshooting electrical panels and motor controls.Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and soft starters.Basic PLC input / output diagnostics (Allen-Bradley, Siemens).Knowledge of sensors, transmitters, and instrumentation.Reading and interpreting electrical schematics.Electrical safety awareness (LOTO, arc flash, GFCI).Food Safety & Compliance :Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).HACCP awareness.Sanitation and food-grade materials knowledge.Cross-contamination prevention during maintenance.Tools & Systems :Proficient with diagnostic tools (multimeters, infrared cameras, etc.).Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).Basic fabrication and welding (stainless steel preferred).Spare parts and inventory management.Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in hot, cold, and humid environments as well as confined spaces and at heights as needed.
Work Environment
This position operates in a food manufacturing environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, variable temperatures, and moderate noise levels. Proper PPE must be worn at all times.
