About The Position
1. General job duties. Types of procedures required. Reviews patients' medical charts for prescription, treatment time and prescribed dose. Confers with physicians as necessary to clarify orders. Gathers information on new patients including prior diagnostic studies, port films of previously treated areas, and the like. Assists Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist in patient simulation and localization procedures by scheduling diagnostic exams, revising treatment plans with physicians, obtaining tumor localization films, placing necessary markings on patients, fabrication of immobilization devices, and assembling treatment charts. Explains procedures to patient in order to allay fears and elicit cooperation. Informs patients of possible treatment reactions, side effects, and advises on care of irradiated body areas. Utilizing the computer system, will enter charges for treatments rendered. Positions patients under equipment, according to procedure and required standards of accuracy, in order to expose diseased body areas to ionizing radiation treatment and to protect all other body areas from radiation. Maintains supply inventory to assure availability of needed supplies. Observes patients during procedures via CCTV monitor ensuring patient maintains required positioning. Reports any change in patient condition, psychological or physiological, to the physician or other appropriated patient care personnel. Fabricates custom treatment devices for individual patients. Performs quality control tests on treatment equipment according to procedures developed by the Medical Physicist and records and reports results. 2. Equipment utilized in the unit / dept. (Is there computerized charting, medication systems, etc.) CT / Sim, Varian Halcyon linear accelerator, Aria RO for radiation oncology management and Epic for parent EMR. 3. Required skills and minimum years of experience. 2 years of experience as a radiation therapist. Knowledge of radiation therapy procedures and equipment operation, and of physics and patience care techniques at a level acquired through an approved program in radiation therapy technology, usually lasting one year beyond radiography training. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, allied health personnel, and other Medical Center personnel when explaining procedures and gathering and exchanging patient-related information. Analytical skills necessary in order to provide accurate care instructions to patients, interpret physicians' prescriptions for treatment course and effectively duplicate treatment plan. 4. Specific licensures and certifications / registrations required. (ARRT, CRT, BLS, ACLS, etc) ARRT registered with Illinois IEMA licensure. 5. Shift or schedule requirements. (Will the employee ever work alone? Is call required? If so, how often? Are weekends required?) Monday through Friday 8a – 4 : 30p or opening 7 : 00-3 : 30p, no weekends and closed on 6 major holidays, New Year, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas 6. Dress Code : Only solid colored scrub pants may be worn. Scrub pants cannot drag on the floor. Printed scrub tops may be worn if the print is appropriate for the workplace. For Mission Partners whose primary job is in a clinical area, footwear is limited to closed toe shoes without any holes on top, such as athletic shoes, tennis shoes, and non-vented Crocs / clogs with a strap around the heel. 1. Jewelry and other adornments are simple and appropriate for job duties. Piercings should be small and conservative. 2. Pins, stickers, or other adornments that are not OSF-provided, do not recognize an OSF sponsored activity, and / or are not for employment-related certifications / qualifications are not allowed. 3. Hats / caps and sunglasses, unless authorized by Leadership as specific to a job, are not to be worn while on duty. 4. Good personal hygiene is expected of Mission Partners. 5. Hair needs to be clean, neatly styled, and manageable for the job performed. a. If the length of the hair could impose a safety hazard for the job performed, it needs to be fastened away from the face. b. Mission Partners who come into direct contact with patients and / or food preparation may be required to cover their hair and / or beard with a hair net or cap in order to comply with Public Health regulations. c. Hair traits associated with race are protected and not a violation of this policy. Examples of protected traits include, but are not limited to, hair texture and protected hairstyles such as braids, locks and twists. 6. For anyone who works in a direct patient care area and may be required to be fit tested, facial hair must be in compliance with OSHA and CDC facial hairstyle guidelines. 7. Make-up needs to be moderately applied and appropriate for professional / business appearance. 8. Odors should not be excessive. No overpowering odors (fragrances, body odor, tobacco or other smoke, etc.) shall be noticeable from a Mission Partner during work hours. 9. Fingernails are to be neatly manicured and of reasonable length (less than ¼ inch in length from tip of finger for those Mission Partners providing direct patient care). a. For those individuals providing direct patient care, cleaning patient / treatment rooms, and or / preparing items that touch the patient or are used for patient care, artificial nails, extenders, or enhancements are not allowed. b. Anything applied to natural nails, other than nail polish, is considered an enhancement. Gel and shellac nail polish are considered an enhancement and not allowed for those individuals providing direct patient care. c. Nail polish colors need to be appropriate for professional / business appearance. 10. Tattoos are permissible if they are simple, appropriate, non-discriminatory and non-offensive to co-workers, patients, customers, vendors or others in the workplace. If Leadership believes a Mission Partner's tattoos violate this or complaints are received, the leader has the discretion to seek further understanding about the relevance of the tattoo; outcome of this review may lead to the Mission Partner being required to conceal or cover their tattoos to maintain a professional appearance. a. No visible tattoos are allowed above the shoulders (excluding tattoos for natural looking cosmetic enhancements, such as eyebrows, lips, and eye liners). b. A tattoo is considered inappropriate if it contains messages, slogans, or depicts images such as, but not limited to : gang related images, racially inappropriate images, violence, sexually suggestive or explicit images, is extremist or undermines the Mission or Values of OSF. c. A tattoo is considered offensive if it depicts, describes, or refers to intolerance of, or discrimination against any protected class such as race, color, creed, religion, age, disability, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or it is commonly associated with any organization or group which advocates such intolerance or discrimination; or it could damage the reputation of OSF. 10. Tell us about the unit / department specific training and orientation program. This is a brand new department. Varian will provide training for the Halcyon. Additional Comments : Saint Mary Medical Center Radiation Oncology is a new department scheduled to go live on December 11. A mobile Halcyon unit will be put onsite, and Varian will provide training. There will also be a mobile CT unit for simulations. There will be adjacent clinical space inside the building with front desk, exam rooms and office space. This will be the working department as a new permanent site is designed and built over the next couple of years.
