Senior Skilled and Technical Operations Position
This is a senior skilled and technical level operations position, which will include general supervision responsibility. Work includes skilled trades at the master electrician level involving electrical installation, repair, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and system upgrades. The position is also responsible for monitoring, documenting, and directing apprentices. Performs complex work involving troubleshooting, investigation, and repair of electrical distribution systems, lighting control systems, low-voltage systems, and emergency power systems. Assignments are carried out in accordance with accepted electrical trade standards and applicable codes and regulations. Work is reviewed periodically on a project basis.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, an active Master Electricians license issued by the State of Maryland, Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Board of Master Electricians for Howard County, and a valid drivers license with a good driving record. Preferred qualifications include two additional years of experience as an industrial / maintenance electrician.
Essential position responsibilities include installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical distribution systems, conducting preventive maintenance on electrical panels, troubleshooting and repairing complex electrical issues, and ensuring compliance with electrical codes. The position also involves managing work performed by contractors, providing training and supervision of apprentices, and assuming responsibilities of the lead person in their absence.
Essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required include knowledge of standard electrical practices, thorough working knowledge of electrical installation and troubleshooting, ability to order and manage electrical materials, skilled use of hand tools, and ability to organize work and read engineering drawings. The position also requires ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, operate a motor vehicle safely, and respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.
Physical requirements include the ability to climb and work from scaffolds, ladders, catwalks, aerial lifts, and bucket trucks, and the ability to carry tools and handle materials and equipment of 80 to 100 pounds. The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected by the Howard County Department of Education.
Working hours for a full-time position are 8.5 hours per day including an unpaid duty-free thirty-minute lunch. This position is designated as an "emergency employee" under the AFSCME negotiated agreement and may require response during inclement weather and other emergencies. Weekend / evening and shift work may be required as allowed by the AFSCME negotiated agreement.
