The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City's evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 professionals and experts. DOC seeks to recruit Intervention Specialists assigned to the Counseling Services Unit. Under the direction of the Director of Interventions and Special Populations, the Intervention Specialist will manage serious behavioral issues through meaningful behavioral and family interventions and will assist with behavior modification programming for individuals in custody in various custody levels, including restrictive housing settings and general population. The individuals served include all genders, and both adult and emergent adult (18-21) populations.
Responsibilities
- Daily interaction with individuals in custody for extended periods of time
- Implementation of rehabilitative and behavioral modification programs and services
- Conduct interviews with people in custody to gain knowledge of family history and support
- Coordinate and facilitate family interventions inside correctional facilities
- Conduct outreach to family members, community programs, and other stakeholders to support positive behavioral change for individuals in custody
- Coordinate and facilitate behavioral interventions with multidisciplinary teams after serious acts of violence are committed
- Encourage individuals to have positive interactions, behaviors, attitudes, ethics and morals
- Prepare reports and document interactions, complete progress notes, and create behavioral contracts
- Attend training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to improve knowledge and skills
- Work in a multidisciplinary team with uniformed correctional staff and providers to achieve rehabilitative program goals
- Assist with deescalating conflicts and managing non-compliance with program rules
- Respond alongside uniformed correctional staff to manage incidents in designated housing areas to ensure safety and security
- Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described above; orHigh school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described above; orEducation and / or experience equivalent to the above options, with at least one year of the specified experiencePreferred Skills
Experience working directly with juveniles (ages 10-18), emerging adults (18-21), or adults in group, community, educational, or institutional settingsKnowledge of the criminal justice system and experience working with justice-involved populationsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of correctional staffAbility to exercise independent judgment and prepare written reports and documentsKnowledge of human development, counseling techniques, behavior modification and intervention techniquesAbility to mentor and provide positive interaction, guidance and leadership to people in custodyExcellent writing, communication, interpersonal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skillsSalary : $62,868.00 – $72,298.00
