FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind / visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.
The incumbent of this position provides support for the Campus Police Department and the Law Enforcement Officers.
- Answers incoming emergency / nonemergency phone calls and monitors / responds to all incoming emergency / nonemergency text messages received in the Communications Center. Obtains critical information from callers requesting police assistance and keeps all callers calm as they handle any given situation. Communicates to police officers precise and accurate information they receive from callers. Operates and monitors multiple security surveillance cameras across campus and at designated access control locations.
- Communicates via two-way radio with police officers dispatching them to various emergency / nonemergency calls for service. Maintains the location and status of police officers at all times in the Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system. Maintains communications with other agencies when emergencies require public safety assistance from outside agencies. Operates a computer workstation that provides access to various school information and databases. Operates a fire alarm computer workstation monitoring various urgent / nonurgent alarms to ensure student and staff safety from fire emergencies.
- Operates the NCIC / FCIC computer workstation. Monitors severe weather alerts through the National Weather Service and the NOAA weather radio. Submits work orders to Customer Service Center. Activates various emergency mass notification systems for critical incidents. Notifies key administrators during campus emergencies.
- Assists parents / visitors arriving at the Communications Center and at gate intercom boxes. Issues visitor IDs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

A high school diploma or its equivalent and one year of experience in radio-teletype operations, sworn law enforcement, dispatching, forestry, firefighting, or other public contact work.College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for the required experience.Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required high school education.Proof of High School Diploma will be required at time of interviewCondition of Employment
Applicants under consideration for employment at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be required to complete background investigation. Fingerprints will be taken and sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a background check of your criminal history record(s) at the state and national level. FSDB is a drug-free workplace.
Sign Language Requirements
Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to obtain an Intermediate proficiency level in American Sign Language within four years of hire. Please note : The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills.
Hiring Salary Range : 12-month position, $40,976.00 - $48,476.00 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education. Position is eligible for an additional $1.00 per hour due to majority of shift being between 5 : 00pm 6 : 00am. Pay additive is dependent on agency funding.
