Job Description

The Elementary School Nurse provides healthcare to students, performs health screenings, coordinates referrals to private healthcare providers, and serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment. The school nurse will also help manage health plans for students with chronic health conditions and disabilities, providing necessary care and intervention.

Key Responsibilities :

Health Services

  • Provide direct healthcare to students.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers.
  • Conduct or coordinate health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) and maintain accurate records.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for students with special health needs.

Health Education

  • Educate students, staff, and families on health and wellness topics.
  • Develop health education programs and materials.
  • Provide training for staff on health-related issues, including chronic illness management, infection control, and emergency procedures.

    • Health Environment

  • Promote a healthy school environment through disease prevention, health promotion, and safety initiatives.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health regulations and school policies.
  • Identify health and safety concerns in the school environment and recommend corrective action.

    • Collaboration and Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community healthcare providers.
  • Collaborate with school staff to develop strategies and plans for addressing the health and safety needs of students.
  • Communicate effectively with parents / guardians regarding their child’s health needs and concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.

    • Record Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students.
  • Prepare and submit reports as required by the school administration and health authorities.
  • Document care provided and any changes in students' health status.

    • Qualifications :

    Education and Certification :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) with relevant experience.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
  • Certification in school nursing (preferred).

    • Experience :

  • Previous experience in pediatric or school nursing preferred.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, health education, and public health principles.

    • Skills :

  • Excellent clinical and assessment skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records and basic office software.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

    • Working Conditions :

  • Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.
  • Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common in school settings.
  • Ability to lift and assist students as needed.
