Job Description
The Elementary School Nurse provides healthcare to students, performs health screenings, coordinates referrals to private healthcare providers, and serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment. The school nurse will also help manage health plans for students with chronic health conditions and disabilities, providing necessary care and intervention.
Key Responsibilities :
Health Services
- Provide direct healthcare to students.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers.
- Conduct or coordinate health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) and maintain accurate records.
- Respond to emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for students with special health needs.
Health Education
Educate students, staff, and families on health and wellness topics.Develop health education programs and materials.Provide training for staff on health-related issues, including chronic illness management, infection control, and emergency procedures.Health Environment
Promote a healthy school environment through disease prevention, health promotion, and safety initiatives.Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health regulations and school policies.Identify health and safety concerns in the school environment and recommend corrective action.Collaboration and Communication
Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community healthcare providers.Collaborate with school staff to develop strategies and plans for addressing the health and safety needs of students.Communicate effectively with parents / guardians regarding their child’s health needs and concerns.Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.Record Keeping and Reporting
Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students.Prepare and submit reports as required by the school administration and health authorities.Document care provided and any changes in students' health status.Qualifications :
Education and Certification :
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) with relevant experience.Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in NebraskaCertification in school nursing (preferred).Experience :
Previous experience in pediatric or school nursing preferred.Knowledge of child growth and development, health education, and public health principles.Skills :
Excellent clinical and assessment skills.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Proficiency in using electronic health records and basic office software.Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.Working Conditions :
Work is performed in a school environment with frequent interaction with students, staff, and parents.Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common in school settings.Ability to lift and assist students as needed.Application Process :
