INTRODUCTION :

This position is located on the Spokane Indian Reservation within the Fire and Fuels Management organizations. This position is an advanced level wildland firefighter functioning as an experienced, supervisory leader of hand crews, engine crews, or fuels crews performing wildland fire preparedness, suppression, and fuels management duties in adverse climate, fuels, and terrain conditions. This is an arduous position and subject to medical screening and physical fitness testing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES :

• Major duties will be serving as an experienced and seasoned leader over assigned subordinate staff.
• Performs individually or leads crew(s) in wildland fire suppression, fire prevention, preparedness, detection, resource rehabilitation, mobilization, hazardous fuels management, and training programs.
• Serves as a supervisory leader of an engine crew, hand crew or fuels crew of two or more firefighters during wildland or fuels management operations.
• Exercises abilities to apply independent judgement in performing more difficult and complex work across the wildland fire and fuels management spectrum.

• Directs others in operation and use of engine equipment and provides on-the-job instruction to other technicians.
• Inspects, services and adjusts fire engines including the pump, water lines, tank and reel.
• Keeps the engine in full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
• Provides assistance to the Fuels Management program with the planning, implementation, and monitoring of hazardous fuels reduction projects such as pre-commercial thinning, chipping, forest mowing and masticating, and prescribed burning.
• Assist Fuels Management staff with administration of Forest Work Contracts such as locating and marking fuels treatment unit boundary lines, posting bid advertisements, preparing bid packets, tagging treatment units, performing quality control inspections, and gathering treatment effectiveness data.
• Participates in fire and safety training techniques through classroom and on the job experience with crew proficiency checks and drills using safety sessions and fire critiques. In addition, practices methods of fire suppression in a safe efficient operation with the use of hand tools, equipment and vehicles used in fire line activities.
• Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of assignments.
• May assist training other personnel in more specialized assignments such as backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, construction of helistops, Helitack operations and performing hover hookups.
• Participates in and provides assistance in the delivery of field and classroom training.
• May be assigned to a fire lookout to provide detection and reporting of wildfires.
• Reports smoke and fire to a dispatcher giving location, estimated size and other pertinent information.
• Reports weather and fire behavior information keeping the dispatcher and / or fire officials informed of current conditions.
• May be assigned to support other all-hazard situations, which may include but are not limited to, search and rescue, medical response, weather events or other natural or human disasters.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

Must have a valid Washington state drivers license and be Tribally insurable.

Must maintain Red Card at a minimum ENGB.

Must be annually certified for arduous duty through the NWCG Medical Standards Program and Work Capacity test.

Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground and recurring bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average ability and dexterity.

Must have all training and classroom certification for Engine Boss.

Must have ability to effectively communicate through both verbal and non-verbal means.

Able to follow protocol for communicating over a radio dispatch system.

Keeps supervisor and assigned personnel informed on progress of work, problems encountered, and recommendations to improve the programs.

Able to receive and provide direction for accomplishing program goals and tasks.

Must meet the physical fitness test for Arduous positions.

In addition to all required training for FFTI and FFT2, the following NWCG courses will serve as guidance for meeting full certification of ENGB :
