Position Summary :
The PRN (Pro Re Nata) School Nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by identifying and assisting in alleviating or minimizing the effects of health-related barriers to learning in individual students and by promoting an acceptable level of wellness for students and staff. This on-call, as-needed role assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and / or referral activities. The PRN Nurse serves as a direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies, provides relevant health instruction and guidance, and upholds professional nursing standards, state regulations, and district policies to ensure health care continuity for students.
What You'll Be Doing : (Responsibilities)
Student Health Assessment & Care
- Recognize factors that identify individuals at risk and conduct normal growth and development screenings to identify existing problems.
- Obtain and record comprehensive immunization histories, and assume responsibility for compiling immunization reports for compliance with state statutes.
- Identify communicable diseases common to the school-age population and follow established systems for reporting information to the local health unit.
- Plan and implement effective case-finding procedures.
- Explain identified diseases or conditions, their progress, and prognosis.
- Develop comprehensive nursing care plans, when appropriate, with specific goals and objectives.
- Assess the degree of significance of the health problem to the student's education progress.
- Perform appropriate special health care procedures prescribed for students.
- Implement procedures regarding medication, including education for student, family, and staff.
- Conduct meaningful nursing assessments of the physical status of the 'well child' to identify deviations from the normal.
- Recognize health problems, disease, or disability as early as possible and utilize methods to assess a child's growth and nutritional status.
- Assess student and / or family for level of knowledge and behavior regarding health problems, and evaluate health deviations for significance, interpreting them to the student and family.
- Assess strengths and weaknesses of student and / or family in relation to health problems and their adaptation.
- Assess severity of injuries, perform appropriate first aid procedures effectively and efficiently, and document essential information regarding illness and injury.
Health Education & Wellness Promotion
Utilize appropriate health counseling and guidance techniques, including the ability to follow through on referrals.Present timely health information when working with student problems, based on the student's level of comprehension.Encourage teachers to incorporate health concepts in their curriculum.Maintain resource files of pertinent health instruction materials for students and teachers.Demonstrate effective methods of presenting health instruction.Select health education materials and curriculum having scientific accuracy and learning effectiveness.Teach first aid procedures and legal aspects of giving emergency care.Compliance & Collaboration
Apply sound decision-making processes to school nursing practice.Effectively utilize local, state, and national resources to meet identified needs in the population served.Work cooperatively with other health professionals in identifying and delivering needed services in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.Describe the role and responsibility of a school nurse as a health professional in an educational setting.Demonstrate management and organizational skills necessary to facilitate health care in a school through a working knowledge of school organization and administration.Express a sound philosophy of ethical issues in nursing, education, and medicine.Work within the framework of the Missouri Nursing Practice Act for implementation of laws and regulations pertaining to school health.Assist teachers in identifying health problems and recognize goals and objectives of the total educational program.Relate policies and procedures to the health of the student.Utilize county, state, and federal laws and regulations related to school health when needed.Analyze the cause of accidents and plan intervention.Take an active role in planning and implementing disaster drills and procedures in the school community.Assess physical facilities for safety and environmental hazards.Demonstrate an awareness of public health measures used to control disease (e.g., sanitation inspection).Analyze accident reports and recommend a plan to prevent further accidents.Demonstrate a working knowledge of factors that influence the learning environment (e.g., temperature, lighting, noise, humidity).Interpret school health needs to the community at large.Identify inadequacies in school health services that require development of resources.Collaborate with other health care providers and agencies outside the school system to ensure continuity of care.Implement a plan to continuously update and expand knowledge base, which is key to the maintenance of individual competency.Incorporate new techniques and knowledge in the field of school health in daily practice.Other duties as assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities : None
To Be Successful at This Job, You'll Need To : (Qualifications)
Licensed in the State of Missouri as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Associate's degree program in Nursing (ADN) or LPN program).Current CPR / First Aid / AED certification.Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.Computer skills in Word and Excel.Experience working in a school or medical setting.Ability to work as needed and on-call for assignments.Physical Demands : This job requires that the employee be able to : sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, lift objects of at least twenty-five pounds, and kneel on the floor to perform medical procedures. Must be able to walk a minimum of two flights of stairs. Assist in the lifting of students, in an emergency situation. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Terms of Employment : Length of work year : Up to 25 Hours per week; On-Call, PRN, Temporary position.
