Deputy Sheriff
The County of Marin is offering a competitive compensation package for new, full-time, regular hire experienced Lateral Deputy Sheriffs. They are eligible to receive a $10,000 signing bonus which will be split into two equal payments : 50% at time of hire (i.e. first paycheck) and the remaining 50% after successful completion of their probationary period.

This Deputy Sheriff opportunity is for those who are lateral applicants, academy graduates or current academy attendees. Deputy Sheriffs serve in patrol, custody, court, and investigation divisions that include a variety of specialty assignments. Deputies provide law enforcement for unincorporated communities and rural areas throughout Marin County. Deputies process, guard, transport, and supervise prisoners as well as provide security for courtrooms.
Our Highly Qualified Candidate : The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the desire for a career in law enforcement through college coursework and, in accordance with POST guidelines, will continuously demonstrate, maintain and exceed high standards of personal conduct in the following areas : personal and professional integrity, attention to safety, effective impulse control, avoidance of risk-taking activity and substance abuse, consistent acceptable performance in high-stress environments, good interpersonal skills, proper decision-making and judgment, and ability to continuously learn and effectively communicate.
Knowledge of : basic law enforcement concepts and terminology, including jail operations, criminal investigation, law enforcement, and crime prevention; first aid principles and techniques; report preparation and record keeping; human behavior theories related to criminology, crisis intervention, and crowd control; considerable knowledge of laws and court decisions pertaining to law enforcement; operational principles and practices of criminal investigation, law enforcement, and crime prevention; court and trial procedures; use and effects of police weapons; methods of self-defense and physical restraint; community-oriented policing; organizational policies and procedures; vocabulary of technical / specialized fields of law enforcement such as identification, detention, and pathology.
Ability to : learn, interpret, apply, and explain complex laws and regulations; read and interpret documents in English such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks; communicate effectively in English in both verbal and written form; perform accurate mathematical calculations; comprehend and retain factual information and apply what is learned; observe and remember details of events, names, faces, numbers, and physical descriptions; prepare and maintain clear, accurate, and concise reports and files; exercise tact, self-restraint, judgment, and strategy in dealing with people who may have emotional or physical difficulties; engage in community-based policing, relationship building between law enforcement and community residents, and collaborative problem solving; exercise sound independent judgment in emergency or stressful situations; correctly interpret a situation and take appropriate action under a variety of conditions.
Minimum Qualifications : High School graduation, or equivalent (GED), is required. Candidates using a GED to qualify must have obtained GED scores of at least 35 on each test section and have an overall score of at least 45. College level coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology, or a field related to the work is highly desirable. Applicants must be 21 years of age. In addition to the above, applicants must possess : LATERAL : Experience : one year of current, full-time, paid patrol experience in a California municipal or state police or county sheriff's department or California Highway Patrol, or similar as defined in Penal Code 830.1 or 830.2 OR one year of current full-time, paid correctional experience as a sworn Deputy Sheriff as defined in Penal Code 830.1. Training : successful completion of the California Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Regular Basic Course, and completion of either the Field Training Officer Program or the Jail Training Officer Program. P.O.S.T. Certificate : possession of a California Commission on P.O.S.T.
