Who we are and what we do :

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is seeking motivated interns to join its Media Relations Office. This is a fast-paced public information environment with broad exposure to six separate divisions : the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Highway Safety Office, Driver Services Division, Office of Homeland Security, Centralized Immigration Enforcement Division, and the Tennessee Advanced Communications Network (TACN).

How you make a difference in this role :

This internship will provide the student with the following :

1. Real-world experience working in a statewide public information office.

2. Hands-on exposure to public relations, journalism, video production, crisis communications, and social media management.

3. Opportunities to assist with press releases, media advisories, event coverage, and internal communications.

4. Experience collaborating with law enforcement, first responders, and state leadership.

Key Responsibilities :

1. Support day-to-day media relations tasks, from drafting and editing materials to helping staff press events.

2. Pitch in on everything from content creation and video production to routine office support.

3. Monitor media coverage and prepare reports.

4. Assist with social media, photography, and storytelling projects that highlight the departments work.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Political Science, Criminal Justice, or related fields.
  • Strong writers who are detail-oriented and willing to learn.
  • Creative thinkers with an interest in public safety and public service.
  • Team players who can work under deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
