Engineering Assistant I, II, or III - Traffic Safety Division (2502756)

Position Information : For an Engineer-In-Training, our Engineering Assistant Program is ideal for a new engineer who would like to gain valuable experience and impact public safety statewide. You will obtain knowledge and skills as you rotate through the program and acquire resources as TxDOT helps you prepare for your Professional Engineer (PE) License. Responsibilities and Work Expectations

Performs engineering work with job rotation, training, and continuing education in design, construction, inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and / or transportation operations-related activities, with the intent to pursue engineering licensing / registration through training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority. Work requires contact with local government representatives, engineering contractors, and private entities. Employees at this level may perform work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Note : All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program. Participation requires signing a Program Agreement outlining responsibilities and service time commitment.

Responsibilities by Level

Engineer Assistant I

  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing / registration through training and exams and maintains required documentation.
  • Applies engineering principles to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
  • Assists during emergencies and inclement weather.

    Collects engineering data at project sites.

  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program, including job rotation and continuing education.
  • Performs engineering-related calculations, drafting and design work.
  • Performs engineering-related duties in transportation engineering.
  • Prepares and checks PS&E and designs.
  • Prepares drawings and exhibits to support public involvement.
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Uses automated roadway / structural / hydraulic design programs and CAD systems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Engineer Assistant II

  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work.
  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing / registration through training and exams and documentation.
  • Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Engineer Assistant III

  • Trains less experienced staff and may serve as a lead worker.
  • Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Acceptable Substitutions for all levels :

  • Master's degree in engineering or a Master of Engineering from an ABET-accredited program may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Additional Substitution for Engineering Assistant III :

    Experience :

    Engineer Assistant I

    No work experience required. No supervisory experience required.

    Engineer Assistant II

    1 year of engineering-related experience. No supervisory experience required.

    Engineer Assistant III

    2 years of engineering-related experience. No supervisory experience required.

    Passing the PE exam prior to obtaining required experience may substitute for two years of engineering experience.

    Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Additional Certification for Engineer Assistant II and III :

    Preferred Qualifications :

  • Has passed the FE
  • The required competencies for Engineer Assistant I include :

  • Transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals
  • Plans, specifications, and estimates preparation and compliance
  • CAD systems and plan review methods
  • Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Reading and interpreting plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps
  • Applying engineering principles and methods in job responsibilities.

  • Maintaining a safe working relationship with others
  • Additional competencies for Engineer Assistant II :

  • Advanced and specialized design / drafting
  • Design review
  • Calculations for material, labor, expenses, and engineering work
  • Additional competencies for Engineer Assistant III :

    Knowledge :

  • Applicable laws and regulations related to area of responsibility and safeguarding information
  • Transportation design engineering principles and methods
  • Leading and supervising others
  • Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

    The physical requirements and working conditions for Engineer Assistant I, II, and III include :

  • Inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Hazards from moving vehicles, high places, heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear
  • Light to medium work; typically lift up to 10-20 lbs
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing for safety positions; random drug testing may apply
  • Note : Department of Transportation drug testing regulation does not permit medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive test
  • All employees participate in the EA program with a Program Agreement outlining responsibilities; failure to comply may result in reclassification
