POSITION OVERVIEW

To conduct preliminary and construction surveys on a variety of public works projects.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSExperience, Education, and Training

  • Six months of education, vocational-technical training, or experience dealing with surveying, engineering technology, or related survey work.

Licensing / Certifications

  • Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

    • Knowledge

  • Basic principles, procedures, and terminology associated with survey work.

    • Abilities

  • Work in a supervised situation as a member of a survey crew;
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment such as range poles, level rods, tapes, hammers, etc.;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate effectively verbally;
  • Deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public;
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, field notes, etc.;
  • Effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens;
  • Perform effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City's stated mission and philosophy;
  • Perform the essential function of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others.

    • FUNCTIONSEssential Functions

  • Measures horizontal distances and vertical elevations utilizing both conventional (transits and levels) and electronic survey equipment.
  • Participates in preliminary and construction surveys on street, sewer, and right-of-way projects.
  • Utilizes necessary equipment and supplies, including a variety of hand and power tools, associated with survey work.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, written instructions, field notes, etc.
  • Drives vehicles to different work sites as required.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
  • Operates hand held and vehicle mounted two-way radios.

    • Other Requirements

    Physical : Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions; traverse rough terrain on construction sites, while working near creeks, ditches, manholes, culverts, storm drains, and traffic on City streets. Normal physical strength to handle 50 lb. objects, considering frequency. Normal physical balance : ability to maintain balance and physical control. Normal coordination and endurance, including eye / hand, hand / foot, dexterity of hands and fingers, etc. Average accessibility of all work sites required for the position. Average exposure to weather, temperature extremes, chemicals and fumes, heights, cramped spaces, dust, loud noises, darkness, and work safety hazards.
