Job Title : Sales and Use Tax Accountant
Reports To : Director of Finance
Job Summary :
We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Sales and Use Tax Accountant to manage and ensure compliance with sales and use tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions. This role will be responsible for preparing, filing, and remitting accurate tax returns, maintaining tax records, and supporting audits. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a thorough understanding of tax law, and experience with tax software and ERP systems.
Key Responsibilities :
Prepare and file timely and accurate sales and use tax returns for multiple states and jurisdictions.
Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts and ensure proper documentation is maintained.
Research taxability of products, services, and transactions, and stay up-to-date on changes in state / local tax laws.
Manage and respond to tax notices and assist with sales and use tax audits.
Maintain tax exemption certificates and ensure proper application of tax rates.
Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement) to resolve tax issues and ensure compliance.
Assist with process improvements and implementation of tax automation tools.
Support the monthly and quarterly close processes with accurate accruals and reconciliations.
Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
2+ years of experience in sales and use tax or indirect tax accounting.
Solid understanding of multi-state sales and use tax regulations.
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) and tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, Sovos).
Strong Excel skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications :
CPA or progress toward certification.
Experience with e-commerce, manufacturing, or multi-entity environments.
Experience supporting sales tax audits.
