This position is an exceptional opportunity for a GIS manager with an advanced skillset and people management skills to manage a team and take them to the next level in skill development. It entails a high amount of direct experience with all aspects of geospatial analysis around Green Infrastructure and the benefits it provides. GIC's methods and tools are rapidly evolving, and this role will involve documenting that development while collaborating with a team to evolve efficient, repeatable, and scalable processes that serve a broad client base.

The GIS Manager will supervise the 4-person GIS team, working on land cover mapping and conservation modeling. Technical qualifications include proficiency in the ArcGIS Pro Model Builder, python scripting, advanced spatial analysis, ArcGIS Online administration, and experience constructing advanced queries, documenting methodology, and performing QA / QC on data products. They will also be required to develop models, based on GIC’s existing and forthcoming conservation planning tools, to predict high-value conservation and restoration opportunities, assess climate resiliency, and support future forecasting.

Management Experience :

  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience required for teams larger than two persons.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience with projects that have encompassed multiple fiscal years.
  • As team manager :
  • Team Leadership : The manager will build team cohesion and support GIS team members with task prioritization and time management.
  • Data Production : The manager will supervise the GIS team mapping cities, counties and regions using remote sensing analysis and high-resolution imagery.
  • Analysis : The manager will review GIS Analysts’ work and recommend improvements, new methods for analysis and ensure high quality work is produced using GIC’s models and processes to map and model standard spatial and ecosystem service measures and projections. The GIS manager will also look for opportunities to further automate workflows and standardize products.
  • Data Representation : Oversee and improve existing templates for reporting outputs, including poster maps, report maps, PowerPoint maps, charts and tables and all spatial and tabular information GIC produces. Position will be expected to help develop new and innovative ways to represent

Computer Mapping and Design Skills : This position requires advanced geospatial skills. In order to supervise analysts, the manager should themselves be proficient in remote sensing, ArcGIS Pro (specifically Model Builder and python tools) and ArcGIS Online / Apps. Graphic representation is a large portion of this position's responsibilities requiring the ability to create aesthetically pleasing and concise visuals for large amounts of data. This will include tables & charts, online applications, as well as other cartographic products. Specifically, the Manager must be able to :

  • Manage and manipulate large datasets including both raster and vector data formats (e.g., statewide habitat cores, national datasets including hydrology, transportation, census, etc.)
  • Configure and manage hardware / software needs in the office such as : ArcGIS license management and plotter maintenance. Coordinate data storage and security protocols.
  • Create interactive web maps, story maps, poster maps, and publication maps to communicate geospatial concepts and collect
  • Collaborate with natural resource planners to meet project needs and also supervise the GIS team to meet deadlines and project goals within budget and hour constraints. This requires tracking and managing scopes and deliverables for 20 or more projects.
  • Required Degrees : Bachelor or master’s degree in Geography or in Planning, Horticulture, Forestry or Natural Resources Management as long as there is a high level of GIS knowledge and demonstrated experience. Two to five years of experience working for an environmental or natural resources agency or organization is preferred.

    Required Citizenship : Must be a current U.S. citizen or Green Card holder. No temporary or student visas can be considered.

    Logistical : This role is located ON-SITE in Charlottesville, VA and a hybrid schedule is available for working remotely 2 days of a 5-day workweek.
