Job Summary :

The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber optics, including but not limited to installing, terminating, testing, and splicing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Cabling & Termination :

Have basic copper termination skills.

  • Install work area outlets for floors, modular furniture, and walls (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes, adhere to IES COMMERCIAL labeling standards).
  • Build closets (mount and install backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware).
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cables as required.
  • Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110 / 66 blocks and patch panels).
  • Perform testing : continuity testing of horizontal and riser cables, use volt-ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs, use tone set.
  • Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO / MTP connectors for multi-mode & single-mode fibers.
  • Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate & breakout outside plant fiber (loose tube, e.g., Corning / Commscope, 3DNX).
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan-out kits including buffer tubes.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets per TIA / EIA standards for multimode & single-mode fibers.
  • Complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Testing :

    • Use OTDR, Fluke DTX 180 for testing.

  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide.
  • Splicing :

    • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing on all types of fiber cable.

  • Perform building entrance, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

    • Qualifications :

    Physical and mental requirements include self-motivation, professionalism, problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication. Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, lift up to 50 pounds, and travel as needed. Education : High School diploma or GED. Skills : Proficient with listed tools, terminating all connector types, testing & troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS), industry certifications preferred. Experience : 2-4 years in fiber optics, with additional preferences listed.
