Police Officer Position
The City of Arkansas City is seeking a police officer to perform police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and other related law enforcement activities. The position works under the general guidance and direction of the Operations Police Captain. The role may assist in coordinating, instructing, or supervising the work of new employees as assigned. Essential duties include performing security patrols, traffic control, preliminary investigations, first aid at accident scenes, and detection, investigation, and arrest of persons involved in crimes. The position must maintain availability by radio and telephone for consultation on major emergencies. The employee must carry out duties in conformance with federal, state, county, and city laws and ordinances. The position patrols streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, and prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving law violations. The employee must also respond to 911 emergency radio calls, examine doors, windows, and premises of unoccupied buildings to detect suspicious conditions, and accompany prisoners to the police station, jail, or court. The employee must give advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public, attend training classes to maintain certification, and provide security and transportation for involuntarily committed mental health patients. The position performs duties involving dusting for latent fingerprints, obtaining fingerprints of suspects, interviewing suspects and witnesses, gathering and preserving evidence, arresting violators, summoning ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles, and conducting follow-up investigations of crimes. The employee must analyze and evaluate evidence, prepare for giving testimony and testify in court proceedings, and prepare a variety of reports and records. The position undertakes community-oriented police work such as public assistance, crime prevention, and community programs. The employee coordinates activities with other police officers and other city departments, and maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities and provide mutual assistance during emergency situations. The position requires proven knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment, demonstrated skill in operating the tools and equipment utilized by a police officer, ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, and department regulations, and perform work requiring established physical standards. The employee must be able to communicate effectively, exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and meet special requirements. The employee must possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record, Kansas law enforcement certification as a full-time police officer, and complete the department's field training program within 18 months of hire. The employee must successfully complete a series of pre-employment tests, including a completed application, written testing, personality testing, polygraph examination, criminal history background check, physical capacity profile, drug screen, alcohol testing, medical physical, and psychological examination. The work environment often involves outside weather conditions, exposure to dangerous individuals, and moderate noise levels. The employee must meet essential physical functions, including sitting, talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting, smelling, running, jumping, and engaging in aggressive physical contact. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
