      NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR I

      The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Network Administrator I in the Division of Information Technology.

      This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.

      DEFINITION : Under the limited supervision of a supervisory official, performs complex professional work which includes development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network, multi-user Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), and / or Wide Area Networks (WAN); maintains network security and data integrity; provides consultations and recommendations to infrastructure managers to troubleshoot and resolve network problems, monitor overall performance, and conduct upgrades as required; may be assigned to the administration of Storage Area Networks (SANs); does other related duties as required.

      QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

      Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience. Seven (7) years of professional experience in the development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network environments, including or supplemented by a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hour credits in mathematics, computer science, information technology, and / or computer information systems.

      For positions involved in the administration of a Storage Area Network (SAN), applicants must have at least three (3) years of professional experience installing, configuring, and supporting network hardware and software, one (1) year of which shall have been in planning, implementation, and support of SAN and related technologies.

      OR

      Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by a minimum of eighteen (18) semester hour credits in mathematics, computer science, information technology, and / or computer information systems; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

      LICENSE : Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

      BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Supervises the development, implementation, and maintenance of multi-network multi-user environment.
    • Maintains availability of centralized, decentralized, and remote network services.
    • Schedules and dispatches resources to track / troubleshoot / correct network related issues.
    • Plans and installs software updates and patches to network operating systems.
    • Plans and installs hardware upgrades for network servers.
    • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation for network hardware / software.
    • Plans, configures, and troubleshoots networked devices.
    • Provides guidance to infrastructure managers / technicians to troubleshoot and resolve network problems.
    • Administers user access to network resources.
    • Diagnoses and repairs or coordinates repair of network hardware.
    • Monitors performance of servers and telecommunications devices.
    • Ensures adequate disk space is available to network users.
    • Checks and responds appropriately to errors logged by the server and / or network devices.
    • Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of all errors of high severity.
    • Develops, implements, and ensures adherence to system standards / procedures.
    • Maintains the highest levels of network security and data integrity.
    • Develops, tests, implements, and updates a disaster recovery plan.
    • Ensures backups are performed and verified.
    • Provides technical support to end users.
    • Maintains knowledge of network-related emerging technologies.
    • Coordinates with OTIS and other government agencies.
    • Prepares an annual budget for network components.
    • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic recording and information systems.
    • Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
    • KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of industry standard Network Operating Systems (NOS).
    • Knowledge of server hardware and associated software.
    • Knowledge of telecommunication components.
    • Knowledge of network security and virus protection.
    • Ability to establish goals and set priorities.
    • Ability to schedule and organize work activities.
    • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve network-related issues.
    • Ability to effectively interact with others.
    • Ability to prepare clear and informative reports.
    • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
    • Ability to maintain essential records.
    • Ability to communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

      SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

    • Salary Range : $75,619 - $93,536
    • Employment Period : Twelve (12) Months
    • Union Affiliation : Local 32
