This position involves small projects, landscaping, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, snow and ice control, asphalt or concrete work, brick or stonework, demolition, grading, and site cleanup. The role requires independent work, good judgment, and discretion.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Availability during school closings, weather emergencies, and special events, including snow removal activities.
  • Report to work on time and perform duties as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor or Lead.
  • Wear appropriate PPE when operating equipment.
  • Work with 2-3 team members on various grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Perform planting, lawn maintenance, and seasonal clean-up.
  • Assist with landscaping and hardscaping, including digging, hauling materials, and applying seed or sod.
  • Operate various grounds equipment safely and properly.
  • Complete projects with proper inspection, equipment, and materials secured.
  • Perform general grounds duties like weeding, mowing, trimming, and edging.
  • Maintain equipment and chemicals safely and responsibly.
  • Collaborate with the team on all phases of ground maintenance and support special projects.
  • Stay informed about industry standards and technologies.
  • Work effectively as part of the team, supporting LU's mission.

Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies

High school diploma or GED required. Preferably 3+ years of related experience or equivalent education and experience. Valid Virginia driver's license with insurable record. Knowledge of grounds maintenance and equipment operation. Experience in pressure washing, asphalt, concrete, construction, lawn care, landscape, or hardscape preferred. Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and interact professionally with the public and colleagues. Must lift up to 75+ pounds and work outdoors in Virginia climate. Certifications in aerial lift operation and chemical spraying are desirable and can be obtained with employer support. Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and varied hours is required.
