Overview

VOICE WRITERS : Now accepting applications for voice writers. FULL-TIME, PART-TIME, AND EXTRA HELP positions available.

New Hires will receive a $7,500 SIGNING BONUS. The sign-on bonus is offered to all new bargaining unit employees and is paid out as follows : $4,000 upon beginning work, $2,000 at the first anniversary of employment, and $1,500 at the second anniversary of employment.

Salary

Salary steps are presented as a range from lowest to highest and are allocated into four steps. Progression to the next step occurs after completing one year of service in the current step.

Benefits

  • CalPERS Retirement Plan : benefit formula determined per California Public Employees Retirement System regulations.
  • Health Benefits : plans through Kaiser, HealthNet, and Valley Health Plan. The Court fully pays for medical coverage for employee and dependents when selecting Kaiser; the Court also fully covers the premium for dental and vision insurance.
  • Holidays and Leave : 14 paid holidays, 16 vacation days in the first year, 4 personal leave days, a birthday holiday, and 100 hours of sick leave per year.
  • Longevity Pay : $50 per pay period after 2,611 days of continuous service.
  • Deferred compensation plans available.
  • Realtime / CART Court Reporting Certification Differential : 10% for state or national realtime certification (CRR, CRP, CCRR, CRG, FCRR); 5% for completing Court-administered realtime certification test.
  • Benefits prorated for part-time and limited benefits for Extra Help.

Reimbursements up to $2,000 for limited equipment may be available. A California Driver’s license may be required; travel between facilities may be needed.

Responsibilities

  • Make verbatim official records of court proceedings using machine shorthand and provide read back upon request.
  • Under direction, stenographically record and maintain an official record, read notes as requested, prepare transcripts, and perform related duties.
  • Attend court sessions, record proceedings at high speed, provide read back, and prepare transcripts.
  • Process court information using realtime technology where applicable.
  • Maintain paper and electronic files and perform related duties as required.
  • Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures, and transcript production procedures; English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to record shorthand at 200 WPM with 97.5% accuracy; plan and organize work to meet deadlines; interact with judges, staff, attorneys, and the public.
  • Ability to manage varying dialects and speech patterns; work independently and with others; maintain confidentiality as required.
  • Working Conditions and Essential Functions

  • Indoor work environment with potential for stress and deadlines; high-speed stenographic work; frequent use of stenographic equipment and electronic transcription tools.
  • Essential functions include recording proceedings, providing read back, and producing transcripts.
  • Physical demands include long periods of keyboard use, occasional lifting up to 15 pounds, walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Examination and Application

  • Screening panel to determine qualifications for written and / or oral examinations.
  • Application includes online submission and electronic copies of resume and California Certified Shorthand Reporters Board certification.
