Appointment type : Temporary Exempt, full-time appointment not to exceed three (3) years. The position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.
Position Summary
Under supervision of the Public Outreach and Engagement Manager, the Public Relations Officer develops, organizes, directs and evaluates a comprehensive public participation program to inform and engage the public of the SFMTA activities and objectives. This role balances community needs with agency priorities and represents the agency at external events with the community and stakeholders. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining project websites, compiling progress reports, and responding to questions and concerns from project stakeholders. The officer will develop public education campaigns related to technical state of good repair work and communicate with the public in a creative way.
Examples Of Important And Essential Duties
- Develops and implements a comprehensive public participation program for assigned projects.
- Establishes, develops and maintains relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Collects, analyzes and reports data on transportation activities to inform recommendations and public education needs; analyzes public understanding of agency programs; presents geospatial data to support transit initiatives.
- Keeps the public, officials, advocates and staff informed of agency activities; engages groups and provides information to the media as necessary.
- Develops and provides presentations to communities, staff or policymakers about department activities and services.
- Represents the agency at meetings with boards, commissions and other stakeholders; reports on discussions to the subdivision head.
- Drafts and prepares visual content and communications materials (press releases, reports, social media, presentations) for public and stakeholder audiences.
- Compiles data into reports, graphs, charts and maps; prepares project-related signage and customer information.
- Maintains stakeholder databases and generates computerized reports; posts content on intranet and public website; manages project web pages.
- Supports strategic social media and website content to engage employees and the public.
- Prepares monthly publicity and media reports; handles inquiries and tracks feedback trends; may supervise staff performing moderately complex work.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; ANDFour (4) years of verifiable full-time professional experience in editorial, public relations, public information, or related fields, including planning and conducting a public relations or public education program (equivalent to job code 1312 Public Information Officer for the City and County of San Francisco).Substitution
Additional relevant experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to 2 years).Master’s degree in public relations, journalism, mass communications or related field may substitute for up to one year of the required experience.Nature Of Work
The position may require working weekends and nights on an as-needed basis, driving, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, prolonged standing / walking / sitting, occasional lifting up to 15 pounds, and transport of materials and equipment.
Desirable Qualifications
Genuine interest in promoting public transportation and understanding of transit infrastructure projects.Strong public relations skills, including outreach, government affairs, communications and conflict resolution.Ability to facilitate dialogue, build consensus and communicate with diverse stakeholders.Knowledge of SF Bay Area government and key stakeholders.Ability to distill technical information for non-technical audiences.Experience with GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, SQL, Python, Tableau, or related tools; Salesforce experience is a plus.Excellent writing and public speaking skills; experience with public presentations.Fluency in a language listed in San Francisco Language Access Ordinance (Chinese, Spanish, Filipino) or ASL preferred.Seniority level
