Assistant Director / Director, Global Risk Solutions North America Auto Underwriting Performance

The Global Risk Solutions (GRS) North America Auto Underwriting Performance team is hiring an Assistant Director / Director to support our Commercial Auto portfolio across GRS North America. This technical professional works closely with cross-functional partners (liability performance, auto product, actuarial & analytics, data science, as well as Office of Underwriting and segment underwriting teams) to drive, shape, and monitor the profitability and growth of the Auto portfolio.

Responsibilities will focus on analyzing large volume of portfolio performance reports and metrics, with an eye to identify portfolio trends that are as expected, or better / worse, and use those insights to effectively communicate those insights, drive awareness of portfolio opportunities, and drive favorable auto execution across GRS North America.

The ideal candidate brings a blend of technical portfolio management, traditional underwriting, technical auto underwriting / product experiences, as well as facility with engaging with cross-functional stakeholders to build consensus and drive accretive portfolio actions.

This role reports to the Executive Underwriting Officer for Auto.

If you reside within 50 miles of a hub office, you will be required to go to said office twice a week. We are open to fill this Director-level position based on candidate experience.

Responsibilities

• Analyze data on drivers of performance and execution of underwriting strategies across Commercial Auto. Identifies and investigates noteworthy observations, translating findings into clear, actionable insights.
• Monitors and reports-out on performance, deviations from plan along with corresponding insights / trends to cross-functional stakeholders and the North America Auto Product Board; prepares clear, decision-oriented materials and executive updates.
• Investigates noteworthy portfolio trends and deviations (rate / retention, frequency / severity, mix, limit / deductible structures, exposure and telematics metrics), identifies causal drivers, proposes hypotheses / tests, and executes pilots with clear success criteria.
• Develops recommendations for portfolio shaping (e.g., areas to grow, fix, or maintain) based on analysis and discussion with partners; socializes a cohesive portfolio story with segments and leadership to drive awareness and action.
• Supports competitive intelligence, pricing and product strategy research, and market monitoring to inform strategic positioning and go-forward underwriting strategies.
• Creates and supports processes and tools that enable proactive portfolio management and repeatable, scalable monitoring as the Auto underwriting ecosystem continues to mature.
• Partners with field underwriting to translate portfolio insights into underwriting appetite, rules, and execution; supports guardrails, referral criteria, and playbook refinements to improve consistency and outcomes.
• Drafts and maintains auto technical underwriting reference material as needed.
• Leads and coordinates cross-functional initiatives to implement portfolio and product changes; builds workplans, aligns stakeholders, manages timelines, and tracks outcomes to ensure measurable impact on profitability and growth.
• Serves as a technical liaison to Product, Actuarial / Analytics, Data Science, and Underwriting Technology to support research, testing, and maintenance of Auto underwriting and product capabilities (e.g., territory models, fleet tiering, mileage / UBI data, advanced location and driving attributes).

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and / or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
