Major Functions
Under the general guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works. This is a position requiring manual labor duties of a skilled and semiskilled nature. Ongoing duties will involve new construction, maintenance, equipment repair, mowing, rights-of-way and drainage. Using tools, maintenance equipment, construction equipment, landscaping equipment and other various hand and power tools is a daily duty. All work is performed in the elements, including heat, cold, rain and other inclement weather.
This is an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
Essential duties include :
- Mixing concrete and plaster.
- Assisting in pouring and finishing concrete.
- Helping build forms, headwalls and installing cement block and brick.
- Loading and unloading equipment, supplies, tools, and materials.
- Spreading asphalt in patching potholes in road surfaces. Flagging and directing traffic and assisting in setting up work zones.
- Cleaning culverts, gutters, ditches, swales, storm drains, canals, and many other similar jobs.
- Mowing and trimming grass.
- Removing and replacing sod, sprinkler heads, catch basins, etc.
- Digging trenches, removing concrete, trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery.
- Fertilizing and spraying herbicides.
- Installing storm drainage pipes, curb & gutters and sidewalks.
- Doing other general manual labor work.
- Picking up trash.
- May perform custodial duties such as cleaning windows, bathrooms, vacuuming and cleaning carpets, dusting, emptying trash cans, etc.
- Must be available for duty outside regular working hours when called upon to assist on-call staff or when required by Supervisor or Mgmt. (overtime).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities include :
Knowledge and skills in the use of tools and equipment typical of manual labor work.Strong skills in the ability to evaluate tasks and utilize the best tools and processes to safely accomplish tasks.Assist with ordering and evaluating the types and volume of materials needed for proper repairs and replacements of infrastructure improvements.Ability to understand and carry out multi-step oral and written instructions.Ability to operate mowers, tractors, trucks, and a variety of other hand tools and equipment (power and manual) typically used in construction.Ability to operate power and manual equipment typically used in landscaping, irrigation, grounds keeping and right-of-way maintenance.Sufficient physical strength to perform heavy manual labor.Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team-focused working relationships with team members, leadership, other departments and the general public.Knowledge and skills in the repair and maintenance of asphalt, concrete work, drainage systems and grounds maintenance.Ability to build basic frames for construction and other basic woodworking skills.Ability to shovel, spread and prepare surfaces for concrete and asphalt.Ability to spread and level concrete.Ability to work with various types of chemicals used in maintenance and surface work.Knowledge of safe operations in and around heavy traffic areas.Ability to measure and make basic mathematical calculations.Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.Four (4) years experience in manual labor maintenance and construction work desired.Valid Driver's license.Maintenance of Traffic Certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year preferred.A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
