Overview :

We are hiring skilled Shipfitters in South Georgia to support high-priority naval submarine production and shipbuilding programs. This is a temp-to-hire opportunity for individuals with structural layout, blueprint reading, and shipboard fabrication experience. Candidates must be technically competent, reliable, and capable of performing in both physical and classroom-based evaluations.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Layout, fabricate, assemble, and install bulkheads , foundations , frames , structures , and deck packages
  • Interpret blueprints , assembly drawings , and frame references
  • Perform structural alignment using jacks , wedges , and clips
  • Carry out tack welding of structural components as needed
  • Use tools including grinders , torches , needle scalers , and hand tools
  • Perform burning , plasma arc cutting , and safe torch operation
  • Understand and comply with Work Authorization Form (WAF) requirements and hot work safety rules
  • Follow all procedures outlined in technical manuals, test documents, and drawings
  • Maintain safe, clean, and efficient workspaces at all times

Technical & Assessment Requirements :

All candidates must pass a timed open-book written test and demonstrate strong academic and comprehension skills . The assessment includes :

  • Blueprint reading : Identify components on drawings including assemblies and frame references
  • Weld symbol recognition : Understand and identify the :
  • All-around symbol

  • Fillet , bevel , and double bevel symbols
  • Near and far side of reference lines
  • Defect recognition : Identify base metal defects and weld discontinuities (per NAVSEA 248 training)
  • While no practical fit test is currently required, candidates may be asked about their ability to perform hands-on layout and fitting tasks.

    Minimum Qualifications :

  • 5+ years of shipfitting, structural fabrication, or related shipyard experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to pass a background check for security clearance requirements
  • Own standard shipfitter tool set (tool list provided)
  • Ability to work all shifts and overtime as required
  • Proficient with hand tools , blueprint reading , and layout techniques
  • Experience in confined spaces , at heights , and in varying environmental conditions
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs
  • Familiar with shipboard workspaces , WAF procedures, and safety compliance
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Background in military shipbuilding , submarine production , or fabrication work
  • Completion of a technical or trade program , apprenticeship , or military training
  • Experience working from technical manuals, weld specs, and diagrams
  • Familiar with metal defects , fabrication tolerances , and shipyard safety protocols
  • Valid or eligible for a U.S. passport
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%
  • Physical & Vision Requirements :

  • Able to climb, crawl, kneel, stoop, and lift regularly throughout the shift
  • Must pass Jaeger J1 vision and Ishihara color vision tests (with or without correction)
  • Comfortable working aboard marine vessels and in dusty, hot, cold, or noisy areas
  • Work Environment & Reporting :

  • Reports directly to Shop Supervisor
  • Works in a collaborative team environment with other shipfitters and trades
  • Responsible for safety, productivity, and quality on all assigned tasks
  • Must maintain a professional work ethic and readiness for physically demanding conditions
