Mission or Goal of Unit :

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia's only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest dental schools in the United States founded in 1893. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position :

TheDepartment of Oral Diagnostic Sciences in the VCU School of Dentistryinvites candidates to apply for the teaching and research faculty position ofOral Pathologist. Rankand tenure eligibility commensurate with candidate qualifications andexperience. The primary mission of the School of Dentistryis to educate practitioners of dentistry capable of meeting the general oral healthneeds of the communities they serve. Integral parts of the mission are researchand other scholarly activity, patient care, and service and leadership indental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participationwith other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems and theMassey Cancer Center. This faculty position will provide instruction, research,and patient care in oral pathology.

Position Responsibilities :

Teaching :

Thefaculty member will have primary responsibility for course development,teaching, and management of oral and general pathology curricula for dental,dental hygiene, and advanced dental education students in collaboration withSchool of Dentistry and School of Medicine faculty members. A primary focuswill be on curricula offerings across the entire course of study to supportintegrated biomedical and clinical sciences learning. Teaching acrosstraditional department lines and in multidisciplinary teams is vital. Facultymembers are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed byinterdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creativeexpression. Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculumsystem that includes baccalaureate, graduate, and professional education. Clinicaland didactic teaching are essential. Ongoing professional development inteaching and learning is expected.

Research :

Itis expected that the appointed person will undertake scholarly activityresulting in peer reviewed publications. There are opportunities forcollaboration with all Departments in the School of Dentistry and also with thePhilips Institute for Oral Health Research (www.philipsinstitute.vcu.edu). ThePhilips Institute consists of all of our substantially externally fundedresearch and is focused on diseases of the oral cavity and head and neck includinghead and neck cancer (with a particular interest in the role of humanpapillomavirus), bacterial infection and inflammation and bioengineering.

Clinical :

Theincumbent will conduct a practice in oral and maxillofacial pathology and oralmedicine to include direct clinical patient care and a histopathology biopsyservice. Specifically, the incumbent will participate in the VCU Dental CareOral Diagnostic Services Laboratory. Consultation with other health careproviders using secure digital methodologies is expected.

Service :

Thefaculty member will be expected to serve their department, the School ofDentistry, and Virginia Commonwealth University by serving on committees and taskforces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related communityservice activities is strongly encouraged. Service to external professionalorganizations is expected.

Required Qualifications :

• DMD / DDS degree
• Eligible for licensure in Virginia
• Completion of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited advanced education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
• Certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
• Clinical and teaching experience in oral and maxillofacial pathology with evidence of multidisciplinary applications
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated potential for leadership
• Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• Candidates must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning
• Candidates must demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
• For Instructor and Assistant Professor ranks, the tenure eligible candidate will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
• For Associate Professor and Professor ranks, the tenure eligible candidate will be required to have a well-developed scholarly / research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
