JOB TITLE : Network Engineer

WAGE / HOUR STATUS : Exempt

REPORTS TO : Director of Technology

TERMS : 221 Days

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance and support to all staff members.
  • Troubleshoot network and computer hardware problems and initiate repairs from work orders as appropriate.
  • Respond in a timely manner for all requests for technical and instructional support.
  • Research, evaluate, and make recommendations for any new equipment on the network.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network switches, routers, and related software and firmware.
  • Create and maintain user accounts, folders, and permissions.
  • Configure workstation hardware and software for peak operability.
  • Install operating systems and application software on servers.
  • Maintain LAN / WAN / WLAN / VLAN interoperability.
  • Coordinate transitions to new software versions with departmental and school users.
  • Design, configure, and maintain network security devices, including firewalls, Intrusion Detection / Prevention Systems (IDS / IPS), and content filters.
  • Manage and support Voice over IP (VoIP) and unified communications systems.
  • Monitor network performance and security using network analysis tools to proactively identify and remediate issues, preparing performance reports for leadership.
  • Perform and manage periodic system backups and recovery tests. Develop and implement disaster recovery and business continuity procedures for critical network systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations (e.g., CIPA, FERPA).
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including network architecture, network mapping / diagrams, and configuration standards.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and serve as a role model for all district staff.
  • Deal sensitively and fairly with all persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Maintain confidentiality with all sensitive data.
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education / Certification / Special Knowledge / Skills : Degree in a computer-related field or Network Industry Certifications.
  • Knowledge of LAN, WAN, WLAN, VLAN, and wireless network design, installation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of modern network security principles including firewalls, VPNs, and IDS / IPS.
  • Ability to work with multiple operating systems and network protocols.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve network problems.
  • Ability to function in a team-based environment with the ability to share knowledge and a willingness to learn from the other team members.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of technical ability.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience

  • Ten years of experience working with network systems, computer hardware, and instructional software applications, including but not limited to :
  • LAN / WAN / WLAN / VLAN o Wireless systems
  • Surveillance Cameras
  • Proven experience with router and switch configuration for major vendors (e.g., HP, Cisco, Meraki).
  • Experience with virtualized server environments (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).
  • Working conditions

    Tools / Equipment Used : Hand tools and test instruments for electronic repairs and cable installations; standard office equipment including personal computers and peripherals.

    Posture : Prolonged sitting; regular kneeling / squatting, bending / stooping, pushing / pulling, and twisting. Motion : Repetitive hand motion; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular walking, grasping / squeezing, wrist flexion / extension, reaching; will climb ladders. Lifting : Regular moderate lifting and carrying (up to 44 pounds); occasional heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over).

    Environment : Work is performed in an office environment with occasional districtwide travel. Requires 24x7x365 on-call availability to resolve network and server emergencies, which may require after-hours, weekend, or holiday work. Mental Demands : Work with frequent interruptions; emotional control under stress, ability to reprioritize planned workflow as needs arise.
