Description : Job Purpose

The Bus Aide is responsible for assisting special education students during transport to and from school and / or special activities; ensuring orderly entering and leaving of bus patrons; maintaining seat chart of riders; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Assist bus driver for the purpose of handling emergency situations until the driver can take over.
  • Assist special education students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Monitor students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.
  • Document activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and / or complying with established guidelines.
  • Report observations and / or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for their action.
  • Secure students and / or their equipment (e.g. restraints, checks wheel chair tie downs, seat belts, opens ramp, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

Other Functions

  • Attend meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the vehicle.

    • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :

  • Strong knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Understand emergency evacuation techniques.
  • Administer basic first aid and / or be CPR certified if required by the district.
  • Knowledge of health standards and hazards.
  • Understand state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses; and child behavior.

    • Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :

  • Able to adhering to safety practices.
  • Prepare and maintaining accurate records.
  • Operate equipment used in the transportation of special needs students.

    • Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :

  • Be attentive to detail.
  • Display tact and courtesy, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Able to communicate with diverse groups.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to work as part of a team.

    • Requirements : Physical Demands :

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to supervise children, maintain effective working relationships with children and staff.     While performing the duties of this job, the employee :

  • Will provide the following assistance to students and staff : walking, reaching, holding with arms, bend or twist at the neck and trunk or waist, crouching and / or squatting to assist students.
  • Will operate specialized equipment or office equipment; grasp tools; push wheelchairs; lift and / or manipulating objects or persons, and / or use of motion up to 75 lbs. or equivalent with or without assistance by another individual and / or with or without the assistance of devices designed to support the lifting effort.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance and close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.
  • The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you must raise your voice to be heard.

    • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands :

  • Generally, the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing
