We're seeking an astute and enterprising reporter eager to find new ways of telling stories. The right candidate has good news judgment and is able to break news and juggle daily stories along with analysis and enterprise. We have a sophisticated audience that includes industry leaders at hospitals, insurers, physician groups, tech firms and other vendors and policymakers. Modern Healthcare is based in Chicago but will consider remote work from a state listed on our career site. See below for a list of work locations and our hybrid policy if within a commutable distance from an office. You will be expected to work Central Time Zone hours if remote.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
  • A minimum of two years of reporting experience
  • Minimum of three recent clips
  • Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and readability
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data
  • Ability to digest large amounts of information, "see the story," and execute with urgency as needed
  • Ability to work remotely while keeping editors and colleagues informed of assignments and developments

Job candidates most likely to excel in this position will be self-starters motivated by excellence, hungry / competitive and enjoy being part of a team.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Pay Transparency Disclosure : The estimated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $80,000. The final salary offering will take into account a wide range of factors, including experience, accomplishments and location. In addition to base salary, Crain also offers competitive benefits including retirement plan savings contributions and bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.

Environmental and Work Location

Where you work matters. The job posting will provide specific information on where and when your amazing work would be performed. Employee work location is determined by the needs of the specific team and may include on-site, hybrid or remote. Employee work location is subject to change.

  • An "in-office" role would require the employee to come into the office most days with occasional flexibility to work remotely if tasks can be performed elsewhere and if the manager approves.
  • A "remote" role would allow an employee to work from a home office that is in one of the states Crain does business in.   • A "hybrid" role would be a mix of in-office and remote work, with a specified schedule for coming into the office or at the discretion of the employee with the manager\'s approval, subject to change.
  • Employees who live within a reasonable commute distance from a Crain office are expected to work on-site 3 days per week.
  • Many positions may include field work such as conducting in-person interviews, attending work-related events, and meeting with sources or clients. Travel to cover news stories / events, meetings with clients, and to our geographically separated offices may be required. Work hours may include non-standard hours and on-call time as needed. Travel and schedule requirements are subject to change as a role evolves.

    Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of many Crain jobs. Physical activities may include frequent in-person or virtual interactions. Most positions require remaining at a desk / computer workstation for prolonged periods, and the ability to perform computer-related tasks and maintain documents within filing systems. Must have close visual acuity to analyze reports and information. Typical physical requirements include light work up to 25 lbs, with some roles requiring up to 50 lbs.
