Equipment Operator

The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development / utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.
This position is required to work extended hours during emergencies and inclement weather.

Assists in asphalt / pavement maintenance
Repair of potholes, full depth patching of damaged asphalt and repair of utility cuts
Operate a dump truck and other construction equipment such as a roller and air compressor
Hauling personnel, equipment and materials to and from the job
Part of the ground crew setting up traffic control, removing damaged asphalt and cleaning / prepping the area for new asphalt
Participate and operate the equipment associated with the seasonal loose leaf collection program and snow / ice removal program
Education and Experience : High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; Less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and / or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
Licenses or Certifications :
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Knowledge of :
Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment
Occupational hazards and safety guidelines
Uses and properties of supplies and equipment
Skill in :
Verbal and written communication
Establishing and maintaining productive working relationships
Ability to :
Perform routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions
Follow instructions provided by a supervisor
ADA and Other Requirements :
Physical Effort : Very Heavy : Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Environment : Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces, and warehouse or shop environment. There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises. Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate and communicable diseases.
