Recreation Supervisor II Fitness, Health & Sports
The purpose of this position is to supervise work coordinating and supervising the operations of fitness, health, and sports. Work involves planning, coordinating, and supervising employees involved with fitness classes, personal training, and youth & adult sports. Teams and employees this position oversees includes : Recreation Program Supervisors and Leaders, Fitness / Facility Attendants, Instructors, Contractors and Volunteers. Work is performed under the direction of the Deputy Director of Recreation Facilities / Services and indirectly to the Director of Parks, Recreation and Public Areas Maintenance.
Essential functions include coordinating the development and management of fitness, health and sports programs; planning and executing all health, wellness and sports special events, programs, classes, contractual agreements, and maintenance; recruiting, selecting, developing, supervising, training, and evaluating all fitness and sport staff; reviewing membership and sales numbers and statistics to identify potential revenue gaps and modify fitness programs; implementing and overseeing risk management practices to ensure the safety of staff and patrons of the Fitness Center and Athletic Facilities, including the management of the fitness and sports equipment; regularly training and coaching staff on fitness and sport industry updates to ensure all members and participants are trained professionally; developing weekly work schedules for fitness and sport staff and managing overtime in accordance with departmental and FSLA standards; developing and implementing City Wellness / fitness and sports programs in and out of Centennial Commons; certifying departmental staff in First Aid / AED / CPR; recommending equipment and supply purchases to the Deputy Director of Recreation Facilities / Services and keeping accurate inventory of supplies and equipment; monitoring facilities and staff and serving as Supervisor on Duty (SOD) when needed; acting as a managing supervisor; supervising part-time staff; answering phone calls and questions; interacting with patrons, problem-solving issues that arise; ensuring compliance with county Department of Health codes, ensuring all staff have proper shots and medical records; training staff how to properly use and clean equipment; preparing and setting up equipment needed; ordering and stocking all inventory on a weekly basis; and conducting weekly health code checks. Additionally, the role involves recording all incoming revenue; organizing cash, checks and credit receipts daily; correcting any cash handling mistakes updating revenue in the system; and preparing daily remittance for the Finance Department. The role also includes overseeing and coordinating the use and rental of all athletic facilities; coordinating with Public Areas Maintenance Division to identify and schedule repairs, cleaning, etc. of athletic facilities; and coordinating with Public Works -Facility Maintenance Division to identify and schedule repairs, cleaning, etc. of Sports and Fitness Areas. The role performs other duties as required and / or assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required include budgeting principles, practices and procedures; supervisory principles, practices and procedures; principles and practices of youth and adult sports management; principles and practices of health and fitness management; demonstrated knowledge of RecTrac 3.1 and Microsoft Office; computer operations and applications, including word processing and spreadsheets; federal and state statutes concerning the work of the department; mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, as well as complex mathematical operations; general functions and operations of municipal government. Skills include applying supervisory techniques to practical situations; managing a section budget; developing bid specifications; effectively managing personnel, equipment and supplies to maximize departmental efficiency; determining work needed from visual inspections; expressing and implementing ideas on technical subjects clearly and concisely; compiling data, analyzing information and drawing conclusions; planning for future parks and recreation improvements and city facility's needs; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with city officials, employees, and officials of other governmental bodies; meeting and working with the general public; completing detailed work accurately; working effectively with a wide range of people; meeting specified deadlines; prioritizing daily workflow; working as a team member with other employees; communicating effectively with others, both oral and written; working autonomously when necessary; handling multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions; dealing with others in a professional manner; maintaining professional composure in heated situations; developing, implementing and following departmental and City policies and procedures; being knowledgeable of current trends, resources, legislation, and funding sources; being creative and proactive, yet politically sensitive; possessing a strong customer service orientation; and being a team player.
Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Parks & Recreation Management or related degree with an emphasis and / or experience in Physiology or Kinesiology with a minimum of two (2) years of directly related full-time municipal recreation / fitness facility experience, with one (1) year at a supervisory level. A valid Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy is required. Submits Hep-A certification or obtains within six (6) months of hire. CPR and AED certifications within six (6) months of hire. Certification in group fitness from a nationally recognized fitness organization (such as AFAA, ACSM, ACE, NCSA) or other national certification in personal training within one (1) year of hire. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) within one (1) year of hire. First Aid / CPR / AED Instructor certification within one (1) year of hire. SilverSneakers group fitness programs certificates desired. NAYS Sports Administrator certification is desired.
Overall physical strength demands include exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time. The work environment includes sitting, talking, hearing, feeling attributes of objects, grasping, pushing, standing, walking, driving, reaching with hands / arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, repetitive wrist, and or finger movement, moving up and down from / to sitting position on the floor, and physical support and care of children. Environmental conditions include working in confined spaces, wet, humid conditions, varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions, vibration, required to wear a respirator, fumes or airborne particles, work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, dangerous places, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, and potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents or chemicals. Visual activities include clarity of vision at 20 feet or more, clarity of vision at 20 inches or less, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors. Noise exposure includes very quiet, quiet, moderate noises, loud noise, and very loud noise.
