Position Overview

Primary Function :

To assist with the assessment, evaluation, and management of patients who present for health care at UHS.

This position receives general supervision. Broad instructions are provided, and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by the supervisor after completion.

10 months at 75 hours / week

2 months at 30 hours / week

Position Description

Typical Duties & Responsibilities :

Adheres to all University and Wellness Commons policies and procedures.

Assists with patient care before and after provider evaluation and treatment.

Utilizes the electronic medical record (EMR) for appointment scheduling, documentation, and secure messaging.

Delivers care in accordance with UHS policies and within the medical assistant's scope of practice.

Monitors patient flow and communicates any concerns about patient experience to the UHS Director.

Assists with the University's processes for immunization compliance and health form collection.

Supports dispensary operations, including inventory management.

Performs in-house lab testing as approved by UHS protocols under standing orders.

Assists providers in the preparation and processing of bloodwork and cultures for third-party laboratory analysis.

Conducts quality assurance checks on in-house laboratory and exam room equipment and communicates any concerns to the UHS Director.

Assists providers with minor procedures (e.g., IUD insertion).

Performs wound care and suture removal in accordance with UHS protocols.

Chaperones providers during sensitive or intimate examinations.

Administers injections and immunizations per protocol, adhering to CDC guidelines.

Assists with referrals, image ordering (e.g., x-rays), and hospital admissions as directed.

Updates and maintains patient educational materials under the guidance of the UHS Director.

Conducts phone triage and patient follow-up in accordance with clinical protocols and provider instructions.

Provides in-person triage services within the scope of practice.

Ensures exam rooms are fully stocked, clean, and ready for use.

Maintains a clean and safe work environment in compliance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards.

Cleans packages and sterilizes medical and surgical equipment.

Monitors expiration dates and ensures proper storage of immunizations, medications, and laboratory supplies.

Provides administrative support in the front office as needed.

Demonstrates excellence in customer service, cultural competence, professionalism, and teamwork.

Orders medical supplies and medications as directed and authorized by the UHS Director.

Engages in ongoing professional development and continuing education to maintain any certification(s).

Maintains current certification(s) as required by the state of Tennessee.

Machines & Equipment Used : Vital sign equipment, nebulizer, ear lavage equipment, Injection / Venipuncture / phlebotomy equipment, autoclave / sterilization

Personal Interaction / Communications : Student Contact : Daily : One-to-one contact with patients, taking messages, scheduling appointments, answering questions, providing information, collaborating with providers in patient care

Internal : (Operations Committee, Faculty, Administrative department heads)

Daily : taking messages, scheduling, communicating with the UHS team about patients' confidential medical information, appointments, answering questions, assisting with exams and procedures.

External : (Visitors, parents, other institutions or companies, suppliers)

Daily : taking messages, scheduling appointments, answering questions, providing information, interacting with staff, students, and parents

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

Education : Medical Assistant

Experience :

Previous electronic medical record experience.

Phlebotomy experience,

Experience with immunization schedule (pediatric and adult),

2+ years of experience in a medical office setting.

Job-Related Skills :

Phlebotomy,

injections,

nebulizer treatment administration,

ear lavage,

assist with surgical procedures,

knowledge of immunization schedules and

ability to work with providers to ensure proper patient care.

Licenses / Certifications : CMA
