About the Role
The Petrochemical Plant Operator supports the safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant operation of industrial systems during the startup and commissioning of a commercial-scale processing facility located in Ashland, KY. This facility transitions a validated proof of concept—recycling petrochemical waste into low-cost, high-performance carbon fiber and synthetic graphite—into full-scale production.
This role spans the construction, system shakedown, and operational ramp-up phases, requiring hands-on engagement with equipment installation, testing, process validation, and procedural refinement. Once the facility is fully operational, the Operator will be instrumental in sustaining product quality, enforcing environmental compliance, and upholding rigorous workplace safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting in the assembly, installation, modification, and operations of moderate to high temperature processing equipment and piping systems
- Interpreting technical drawings, P&IDs, and fabrication specifications to ensure accurate builds
- Conducting pre-operational checks and supporting commissioning activities for new systems
- Adjusting valves, pumps, and instrumentation to maintain optimal operating parameters
- General plant process monitoring to ensure equipment is functioning within specified parameters
- Conducting routine inspections and recording operational data (e.g., pressure, temperature, flow rates)
- Identifying and reporting or repairing worn or malfunctioning components
- Supporting shutdowns, turnarounds, and equipment overhauls in coordination with maintenance and engineering teams
- Collecting representative samples of raw materials, in-process substances, or finished products using appropriate tools and containers (e.g., scoops, vials, sampling ports) to avoid contamination
- Safely lifting, carrying, and positioning goods using manual techniques or equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks)
- Securing loads to prevent shifting or damage during transit
- Responding to alarms, escalating issues per established protocols, and assisting with troubleshooting equipment faults
- Performing routine maintenance tasks including opening and closing flanges, manual cleaning of process equipment, and visual inspections to ensure operational integrity
- Removing and reinstalling insulation on equipment and piping as required for maintenance access or thermal control
- Monitoring and maintaining stock material and chemical additive levels to support process stability and compliance
- Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
- Collaborating with maintenance, engineering, and supervisory teams to optimize plant performance
- Participating in shift handovers, incident reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintaining accurate logs, reports, and documentation for audits and regulatory reviews
- Supporting other general labor activities as assigned such as facility cleanliness and equipment and tool care
Required Knowledge
