We are seeking an Engineer I / II to contribute to engineering projects and support cross-functional teams across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the completion of engineering projects on time and on budget with limited guidance from senior engineering personnel.
- Collaborate with project managers, production personnel, engineering support staff, IT, and other Douglas Dynamics teams.
- Engineer I : Modify and design tools, fixtures, carts, and facility layouts using SolidWorks 3D CAD; read and create detailed engineering drawings.
- Specify and introduce technologies, automation, methodologies, processes, tooling, gauges, fixtures, and equipment to improve processes and reduce costs.
- Gather and analyze data to understand situations and make independent decisions.
- Apply Lean philosophies (5S, One Piece Flow, Standard Work, Visual Management, Decision Matrices, etc.).
- Coordinate with engineers, skilled trades, supervisors, and contractors to complete projects.
- Assemble prototype and production tools using shop equipment, welders, and hand tools.
- Assist in preparing Job Instructions and training operators in new processes.
- Enter, check, and maintain complex BOMs and drawings; coordinate changes with affected departments.
- Support new product launches and serve as the Engineering representative in cross-functional meetings.
- Share best practices with staff at other DD locations.
- Maintain project tracking and visual management tools.
- Engineer II : Use DDMS tools (3P, 5S, Kaizen) to eliminate waste, improve operations, and launch new products.
- Utilize SolidWorks to generate tooling, fixtures, gauges, plant layouts, product designs, and equipment drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing as required.
- Assist in implementing Standardized Work and Job Instruction preparation.
- Engage plant supervision to support production improvements via time studies, training, and auditing; provide clear feedback.
- Specify and introduce new technologies, processes, tooling, gauges, fixtures, and equipment to improve performance and reduce costs.
- Write technical reports, product literature including manuals and installation instructions; document test results and production processes.
- Improve the performance of technical teams through training and standard work.
- Enter, check, and maintain complex BOMs, ECNs; coordinate changes with affected departments.
- Lead design, testing, and performance validation of prototypes, including internal and external testing.
- Support DFMEA / PFMEA as part of NPD processes via training and facilitation.
- Lead small NPD core teams to develop new designs meeting safety, quality, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost standards.
- Lead cross-functional project teams supporting operational strategic initiatives.
- Partner with other DD locations to share best practices.
What This Role Needs
Education : Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology. Strong oral and written communication skills. Preferred experience with DFMEA, PMFEA, PPAP, FEA, SPC, Control Plans.
Communication Skills : Effective communication with employees at all locations; strong interpersonal and leadership abilities.
Computer Skills : SolidWorks, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint. Experience with data acquisition tools desirable.
Mathematical Skills : Proficiency in trigonometry, algebra, geometry; understanding of calculus and advanced graphing.
Reasoning Ability : Ability to solve practical problems and understand technical problems in non-standard situations.
