Purpose

This Science Communication Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. The participant will assist park staff with interpretation and natural resource management related to cave tours, science education, biology, hydrology, natural resource monitoring, geology and geography. Project leaders will train and mentor the participant and assign tasks involving data and safety protocols. The position aims to help develop career potential and support park fieldwork and reporting. The experience focuses on science communication and resource management across disciplines.

Description of Duties

Provide science-based interpretive cave tours for the public. Assist the Resource Management Division on natural resource surveys and park pages about ecology, ongoing bat monitoring, and White-nose Syndrome status. Serve alongside Youth Conservation Corps and support park operations for visitor access and public enjoyment of natural resources.

Deliverables

Deliverables include science-based interpretive tours, completion of park-wide inventory and monitoring, website development, data processing of hydrological, biological, geological, and GIS data, and collaboration on reports and maps. Develop one or more science education programs for the public, complete an independent project, and update Standard Operating Procedures, Job Hazard Analysis, and safety materials.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal for a recent science graduate with coursework in science communication, education, and GIS. Ability to work with a team and the public, lead projects, collect and analyze data, and work in field and office settings. Preferred : public speaking, wildlife, GIS / GPS mapping, R-analysis, and Sonobat software experience.

Position Setting

Combination of sedentary office work and field work in rugged conditions. Located at 4000 ft elevation. Nearby towns and facilities described for reference. Weather varies; can include sun, rain, and snow depending on season.
