Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music Independence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the tenure-track position of Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music. Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 1,000 full- and part-time students each year. Position Summary The Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music plays a key role in providing a well-rounded liberal arts education to students in Southeast Kansas. The position is responsible for performing a wide variety of duties, including the following :

Leading instrumental ensembles, specifically Athletic Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band.

Teaching undergraduate music courses as part of both general education offerings and the established Associate of Arts in Music degree track.

Providing regular course assessment data and cocurricular ensembles.

Collaborating with Vocal Music and the Theatre Department.

Recruiting for scholarships within the Music Department and for Instrumental Music specifically to further grow the program.

Coordinating and conducting a minimum of two concerts per academic year.

Other similar duties necessary to maintain and support instrumental music, including budget management.

Position requires flexible hours, reflecting day, evening, and weekend rehearsal and performance opportunities.

Qualifications Master’s Degree in Music or a master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration. The applicant’s degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Preferred qualifications include two or more years of community college teaching experience, high school teaching experience, experience working in a rural setting, and experience with assessment.

The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people, with an excellent comprehension of the English language, is essential.

Work is generally performed in an indoor setting, in an office or a classroom as directed, using commonly used technology and resources to facilitate instruction.

Provide own transportation to and from campus, and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles on recruiting trips.

Position Information Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music is a full-time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The instructor reports to the VP for Academic Affairs. Start date is early August 2025.

Job Description The Associate Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Instrumental Music will be under the supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs as part of the Arts and Letters Division at Independence Community College. This position requires teaching, conducting, and recruiting for instrumental ensembles and will also help to fulfill the mission objectives and strategies of the College.

Primary Responsibilities Teaching areas include, but are not limited to : Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Applied Lessons (majors and non-majors), Concert Band, Jazz Band, Athletic Band (drum line and stand band), and other courses based on credentials.

Performance responsibilities include : student recitals, concerts and musical support for theatre productions.

Recruit students for the music program, maintaining instrumental music library, sound and associated music equipment.

Availability during posted office hours for student advisement and academic assistance. Encouraging student retention, continuity, progress in coursework and program, and student success.

Responsible for working with other faculty on course-level and program outcomes development, implementation, and reporting.

Work with other instructors and college personnel to promote ICC and the curricula offerings.

Fiscally responsible for assisting in budget development, budget implementation, and control necessary to deliver instructional programs in an efficient and effective manner to provide access and quality learning experiences.

Assist in development of new programming, including funds development, recruitment, curriculum development and revision.

Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through ongoing professional development by participation through in-service training, workshops, seminars, travel, and publication.

Provide input in the college’s organizational shared governance structure through involvement in committees, councils and supportive activities related to the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies.

Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning modalities (e.g. on-line, video, accelerated, and hybrid) found in the comprehensive community college setting.

Provide information and assist with external reporting for accreditation, governmental, and state agencies. Complete or provide requested input for reports for external agencies as required.

Work with the instructional team to provide outcomes assessment, follow-up, and improvement(s).

General Responsibilities Complete reports and communications in a timely manner for internal and external agencies.

Maintain availability based on the needs of the academic division.

Ensure the security of all ICC property under the supervision of this role.

Illustrate clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications.

Exemplify the ability to work with a broad student population.

Communicate effectively with sensitivity to student learning styles and developmental needs.

Validate responsible work habits through collaborative and collegial social interactions.

Adhere to general rules of safety, procedures, and ethical job standards.

Present expertise in content area and keep abreast of advancements in the domain of instrumental music.

Qualifications Master’s Degree in Music or a master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration.

Computer skills related to instrumental music desirable.

An educational philosophy in alignment with a small, rural comprehensive community college.
