  • The City Climate Innovation Challenge , a landmark program to help cities across the country incorporate and scale innovation to achieve climate goals related to specific priority topics.
  • The National Clean Energy Incubator Coalition, led by LACI , advocates for increased federal funding for incubation organizations LACI Cleantech Debt Fund , the nation’s first early-stage cleantech startup debt fund In New York City, NYCEDC has appointed a consortium led by LACI and the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) to design and operate “ BATWorks ,” a cutting-edge climate innovation hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park.
  • Building on LACI’s unique partnerships and programs in Los Angeles and growing national programs, LACI will provide LACI-incubated startups with funded piloting opportunities at BAT and create a semi-permanent innovation test bed for the Challenge in NYC.
  • Moreover, LACI will manage “ Pilots at BAT ” to help other startups demonstrate their offerings in a live built environment while advising NYCEDC on climate programming at BATWorks.

Position Summary :

  • Reporting to LACI’s  SVP of BATWorks, the Pilots Associate plays a key role in LACI’s work to develop and execute catalytic pilots to scale cleantech, both via the Pilots at BAT program, which serves startup and other innovator piloting needs, as well as via the City Climate Innovation Challenge, which helps cities find and deploy catalytic pilots and policies.  This role works cross-departmentally with LACI colleagues at BATWorks and in Los Angeles, other BATWorks partners, and in close collaboration with NYCEDC as landlord at BAT.  Across Pilots at BAT and the City Climate Innovation Challenge, the Pilots Associate works to identify, develop, and execute successful pilots at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, as well as throughout New York City, to help scale climate technologies.

    • What You’ll Do :

  • Pilot Concept Development & Sourcing : Collaborate with pertinent stakeholders (e.g., LACI teams, NYCEDC, government officials, etc.) on pilot concepts for both City Climate Innovation Challenge and Pilots at BAT.
  • In partnership with LACI MarCom and others, actively drive applications for both City Climate Innovation Challenge and  Pilots at BAT, with LACI-incubated startups having exclusive access to funded piloting opportunities for Pilots at BAT and preferential access for unfunded Pilots at BAT.

    • Pilot at BAT Downselection :

  • Lead on evaluating innovators that have applied for piloting  against numerous factors relating to  business potential, including collaborating with LACI’s internal teams  and NYCEDC.
  • Lead on evaluating specific pilot proposals of those innovators against numerous pilot-specific technical considerations,  including collaborating with LACI’s internal teams  and NYCEDC.
  • Organize and run internal LACI downselection meetings.

    • In parallel, support the downselection process for City Climate Innovation Challenge Communication with Pilot Participant :

  • Finalize a terms of use agreement with pilot participant, including expected pilot outcomes and KPIs and, where applicable, funding milestones for LACI-incubated startups, along with assisting with the completion of a license agreement with the site host (e.g., NYCEDC) Pilot Implementation : Lead coordination of pilot installation and commissioning between innovator and relevant site host (e.g., NYCEDC).
  • Manage all paperwork associated with pilot deployment, including permits and invoices.
  • Verify innovator measurement and verification activities and assess progress towards identified pilot KPIs; at times, independently collect and assess pilot quantitative and qualitative utilization data to track progress.
  • Work with innovators and partners to adjust the pilot execution as pilots are deployed.
  • Provide technical support and facilitate peer-to-peer learnings to pilot participants.
  • Provide regulatory navigation / support, including structured facilitation with necessary permitting agencies (e.g.
  • DOB, FDNY, Parks, SBS) to ensure pilot success.

    • Post Pilot Evaluation and Wrap Up :

  • For Pilots at BAT, lead evaluation of pilot KPIs  and scaling potential and lead coordination of pilot de-installation between innovator and NYCEDC.

    • Lead data analysis and reporting of pilot metrics and learnings, which will result in a brief pilot case study as a supportive deliverable for companies participating in the programs Communications on Pilots :

  • Provide weekly updates to LACI’s internal Pilots Coordinating Team and other groups  on pilot status and key questions for consideration.
  • Provide regular data for reporting  on progress to key stakeholders, partners, and grant funders.

    • Organize and execute multi-stakeholder convenings to highlight pilot learnings and success, as well as drive future pilot applications Why You’re Right for the Job :

    • This means you have :

  • BA / BS degree in relevant field  Project Management : 3-5  years related project management work experience, preferably  in cleantech,  with the ability to assess interdependencies, manage details, adhere to deadlines, and follow up on action items Adaptability : Ability to be flexible in approach and pivot when necessary to achieve project objectives Communication : Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with and between internal teams and external stakeholders Initiative : Actively seeks and identifies opportunities to contribute to and achieve department goals Problem solving : Identifies the root cause of the problem,  potential impact and implications; proposes potential solutions  Preferred Qualifications Awareness of marketing strategies focused on customer engagement, community outreach and utilization Understanding of project implementation requirements with local governments Experience with conflict resolution Experience with grant application and management at the Federal, State level and Local levels Knowledge of zero emission transportation, clean energy, building decarbonization, and circular economy solutions Work Requirements Must work a minimum of 3-4 days a week onsite from BATWorks at the  Brooklyn Army Terminal Occasional evening and weekend hours Frequent travel across New York City Occasional travel to LACI headquarters in Los Angeles Ability to lift up to 30lbs Position Details : This is a full-time position , starting immediately.
