Position Summary
The Medical Director – Emergency Department is responsible for providing medical leadership, clinical oversight, and strategic direction for all activities within the Emergency Department (ED). This position ensures the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centered care in compliance with hospital policies, clinical standards, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Medical Director serves as the primary liaison between the Emergency Department medical staff and hospital administration and plays a key role in aligning departmental operations with the organization’s overall goals for quality, efficiency, and patient satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Governance
- Provide overall medical direction for the Emergency Department, ensuring high standards of clinical care and professional conduct among providers.
- Collaborate with the COO, CNO, and Director of Emergency Services to coordinate clinical operations, staffing, and resource management.
- Participate in hospital leadership meetings and contribute to organizational strategy, operational planning, and policy development.
- Develop, implement, and maintain medical policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with current evidence-based practice.
- Lead physician recruitment, credentialing, and performance evaluations in collaboration with Medical Staff Services and Human Resources.
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement among all Emergency Department staff.
Clinical Oversight
Maintain active clinical practice within the Emergency Department, modeling high standards of patient care and professionalism.Ensure compliance with EMTALA, CMS Conditions of Participation, CIHQ / Joint Commission standards, and applicable state and federal laws.Oversee and evaluate physician and APP documentation practices to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with coding and billing requirements.Monitor key clinical metrics including door-to-provider time, length of stay, LWBS rates, and return visits. Implement improvement actions as needed.Quality, Safety, and Performance Improvement
Direct and oversee all quality improvement, patient safety, and peer review activities within the Emergency Department.Participate in hospital-wide quality and performance improvement committees and initiatives.Review adverse events, patient complaints, and near-miss incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective measures.Establish and monitor performance benchmarks and develop action plans to achieve targeted outcomes for quality, efficiency, and patient experience.Education and Professional Development
Support the education, orientation, and professional development of Emergency Department medical and nursing staff.Provide feedback and mentorship to physicians and advanced practice providers.Promote continuing medical education and adherence to current clinical guidelines.Encourage interdepartmental collaboration and effective communication across disciplines.Community and System Relations
Serve as liaison between the hospital and local EMS agencies, ensuring coordinated pre-hospital and emergency care.Support the hospital’s emergency preparedness and disaster response initiatives.Collaborate with inpatient, surgical, and specialty services to ensure effective patient transitions and continuity of care.Represent the Emergency Department in community outreach and hospital-related external relations as appropriate.Qualifications
Education and Licensure
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree required.Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM) required.Current and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or eligibility to obtain).Current ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certifications required.Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in Emergency Medicine.Minimum of two (2) years of progressive leadership experience in an emergency or acute care setting.Demonstrated success in improving quality outcomes, operational efficiency, and physician engagement.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong leadership and communication skills with ability to engage diverse clinical teams.Comprehensive understanding of hospital operations, emergency medicine workflows, and regulatory requirements.Ability to interpret and utilize clinical and operational data for decision-making.Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement and patient safety.High degree of professionalism, integrity, and ethical judgment.Working Conditions
This position involves both administrative and clinical responsibilities.Typical administrative allocation is approximately 20%, with clinical coverage representing approximately 80%, subject to hospital needs.May require occasional evening, weekend, or on-call participation related to departmental oversight or emergency operations.Performance Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Chief Executive Officer based on achievement of departmental goals, compliance with hospital policies, leadership effectiveness, and quality / outcome metrics.
