The Eighth Judicial District is recruiting for a full-time (40 hours / week), at-will, Attorney-Senior in Taos, New Mexico. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : As determined by the Chief Judge of the District and the Court Executive Officer, this position will provide legal advice, perform legal research and analysis, make recommendations, and support the court / Judicial District, including but not limited to IPRA, mediation / alternative dispute resolution, court / judicial processes, court programs, ADA, and employment laws. Due to budgetary constraints, the salary will be within the target pay range of $37.582- $42.279. Finalists will be subject to criminal background checks.
EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES
- The Attorney – Senior reviews cases, performs legal research, and assesses applicable law.
- May train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate performance.
- Assists the Supreme Court with constitutional rulemaking and supports rulemaking committees, boards, and commissions.
- Drafts recommendations and proposed dispositions for cases.
- Screens pro se petitions for jurisdiction and procedural prerequisites.
- Responds to correspondence, emails, and calls from litigants, inmates, attorneys, and the public on behalf of the Supreme Court.
- Assists in resolving appeals by reviewing motions, docketing statements, and briefs.
- Leads reviews of DWI and Domestic Violence cases on appeal and reviews cases from Motor Vehicle Department hearings.
- Recommends actions and dispositions.
- Drafts memoranda, opinions, and orders for administrative and de novo appeals.
- Analyzes briefs, records, and legal authorities.
- Creates proposed orders for petitions and motions in civil and criminal matters.
- Evaluates court processes and recommends policies to ensure compliance with laws and rules.
- Assists management with personnel issues and ensures employment law compliance.
- May assist with RFPs and bids.
- Develops judicial procedures for stream adjudication and provides legal guidance.
- Prepares and delivers legal training and presentations.
- Attends trials, hearings, and meetings with court staff.
- Researches legislation, provides testimony, and develops legislative strategies.
- Oversees and conducts mediation and dispute resolution processes.
- Facilitates negotiations and promotes settlements.
- Oversees court-mandated programs.
- Builds relationships with parties involved.
- Prepares training materials and ensures deadlines and budgets are met.
- May serve on committees and perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a graduate of an ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice in New Mexico.Five (5) years of legal practice in applicable law required.Experience supervising staff preferred; supervisory experience may be substituted with additional practice years if attending NMJB Supervisory Mentorship Program.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in an office or court setting. A valid driver's license and travel may be required. Work schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Interaction with co-workers, clients, the public, judges, and justices is required.
