Director of Social Services - Family Shelter

A leading nonprofit organization in New York City is seeking an experienced Director of Social Services to oversee operations at a transitional family shelter serving 50+ families. This role combines leadership, crisis management, and hands-on social services expertise to ensure high-quality client care and program compliance.

Responsibilities

Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary social services team of 8+ staff, including case managers, housing specialists, and coordinators

Oversee daily operations of the Social Services Department, ensuring program goals and compliance with DHS and city regulations

Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support for staff and clients

Conduct weekly supervisions, performance evaluations, and staff development

Manage administrative and compliance functions including chart audits, reporting, and database maintenance (CARES, CTS, NYC Way, 4002)

Serve as 24 / 7 on-call emergency contact (phone only)

Support client families in achieving permanent housing placements and maintaining stability

Qualifications

3+ years of experience in a Family and / or Single Shelter setting

Master's Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or a related Human Services field

Previous experience in a Supervisory role

Computer savvy

Strong organizational and crisis management abilities

Desired Skills :

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and / or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Bilingual

Experience with CARES database
