Breastfeeding Peer Counselor / WIC Certifier (Part-time up to 30 hours)
Reports to : WIC Coordinator. Location : HHS / Tribal Health WIC All Districts. Basic Functions : This is a non-exempt position. A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor / WIC Certifier is a paraprofessional support person who performs WIC Certifier duties as outlined by State and Federal regulations and provides basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women on the Colville Indian Reservation. The position is responsible for assessing pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five years of age for eligibility to participate in the WIC program. Duties include but are not limited to performing anthropometrics and biochemical measurements, evaluating diet and health care needs, assigning a food package appropriate to the needs of the client and providing education and referrals appropriate to the risk criteria identified. Will participate in program planning activities, selection and evaluation of grant goals and outreach. Gives basic breastfeeding information and encourages pregnant women to breastfeed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Training :
- Requires High School Diploma.
- Has breastfed one or more children, preferable for six months or more.
- Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
- Continued employment is contingent on obtaining the following training within the required timeline :
- Medical Assistant-Registered.
- WIC Cascades software training completed within 6 months of employment.
- Paraprofessional Competent Authority (P-CPA), complete training within 9 months of employment.
- Breast feeding training to become a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, complete within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of breastfeedingKnowledge of Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC)Knowledge of community, health, and social services resources.Skills to communicate openly about the sensitive details of breastfeeding.Knowledge of collection, tracking and submitting data for reports.Skills in effective communication and listeningSkills to work with minimal supervisionAbility to network and identify community resources.Must be willing to attend training assigned by supervisor.Exercise good judgement and discretion in applying guidelines and time frame to work situations.Ability to follow or give complex (written / oral) instructions.Ability to meet and deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner, and at times in stressful situationsMust be able to learn and perform hematocrit blood testing on women, infants, and children. Procedure to be performed according to state standards and monitored by professional laboratory services personnel.Ability to learn the nutritional requirements of women, infants, and children.Ability to learn and implement computer software for WIC Program.Must adhere to the professional and ethical code of conduct modeling a healthy lifestyle, free of non-prescribed drugs and alcohol during term of employmentMust be able to work with vast diversity of people with a non-judgmental attitude.Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license and be eligible for tribal insurance. Must successfully clear an extensive Criminal History Background Inquiry, and maintain throughout employment.The position has been identified as a "safety sensitive" position. Pursuant to CCT policies, this position is subject to pre-employment, post-accident, and random drug testing.Able to lift 50 pounds.Other Requirements and Preferences
Note : Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
Tribal member and Indian preference will apply; preference will also be given to honorably discharged veterans who are minimally qualified.
If required, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and be eligible for the Tribe's Vehicle Insurance. This position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
