Solid Waste Facility Worker
Performs semi-skilled and manual labor work involving the care and maintenance of solid waste facilities, which includes transfer stations, landfills, sort stations, recycling centers, etc.; provides information to public regarding the various Solid Waste programs and facilities; advises users of the facilities to observe applicable regulations; directs public to appropriate facilities and / or unloading areas; and performs other related duties as assigned. There is one (1) immediate temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed 12 / 31 / 2025 with the Department of Environmental Management - Solid Waste Division in Pu'uanahulu.
Special Working Conditions : Exposure to hazardous, filthy, and obnoxious conditions; may also be subject to shift, weekend, and holiday work as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements : Training and experience substantially equivalent to : graduation from high school, and one (1) year of manual labor work experience that shall have included public contact to provide information and / or customer service, and be able to operate both a manual and an automatic transmission vehicle, and possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from date of issuance by the district court. Note : Possession of current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate is required prior to appointment. Examination : All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Knowledge of : common hand tools and their uses; common methods, procedures, and materials used in maintenance; and occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the work. Ability to : perform heavy manual labor under obnoxious and dusty conditions; operate a vehicle; operate hand and power tools, and light motorized equipment used in grounds maintenance; understand and follow written and oral instructions; prepare simple reports; learn pertinent regulations and policies, and enforce them with tact and courtesy; and understand, communicate, and inform the public about the various Solid Waste programs, recycling, recycling services, and locations.
