Special agents conduct investigations independently or in conjunction with municipal, county, or other law enforcement personnel to gather all necessary evidence to ensure the apprehension and conviction of suspected felons. Applicants must be willing to travel and work irregular hours. Applicants who are certified law enforcement officers should indicate so on their application.

To be minimally qualified for employment as a special agent I or II, an applicant must :
To be considered for a special agent II position, at a minimum applicants must be a certified officer with at least two years of investigative experience.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have :
Law enforcement experience is recommended but not required. Military service, education, and life experience will be considered in lieu of law enforcement experience.
Licenses and Certifications :
Applicants for special agent II positions must be currently certified law enforcement officers.
If hired, applicants who are not already a certified law enforcement officer will be sponsored to attend the 13-week basic law enforcement certification course (academy).

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55 : 10 : 02 : 08.
