Security Sergeant
Sergeants assigned to specialized units perform specific duties characteristic of the unit. A Sergeant may be assigned to any one of the following : Accreditation, Fleet Management, Investigative Services, Community Relations, Administration, Special Events or Recruitment. In addition to performing some or all the above-described duties, a Sergeant assigned to any of these specialized units provides knowledge, expertise, and experience which are unique to day-to-day operations of these units as well as unusual situations which may occur during law enforcement operations. The qualifications required of a Sergeant assigned to a specialized unit are subject to change depending on the changes in the Department's policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Position of Police Sergeant within the Department assigned to a patrol squad, specialized unit, or administrative unit.
- Provides supervision of their area of responsibility. In this capacity, the Sergeant prepares daily shift assignments and presents and trains recruits and officers.
- Reviews and approves reports.
- Prepares and investigates cases; responds to crime scenes; handles radio calls for service and dispatches personnel; keeps their superiors informed of issues of concern to the department.
- Trains and directs probationary officers.
- Manages crime scenes, serving as the incident commander when required and until relieved.
- Ensures all personnel are held accountable for complying with state and federal laws as well as Department and University policies.

Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers' Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Officers' Training and Standards Board OR equivalent training, as determined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Officers' Training and Standards Board, in another state required.Technical Knowledge or Skills
Working knowledge of Illinois Criminal Statutes, Illinois Vehicle Code, local ordinances, and civil law required.Knowledge of University and police department rules, regulations, and other written directives required.Thorough knowledge of geographic areas served by the University Police Department and boundaries served by the University police.Demonstrated safe driving record required.Successfully complete / pass medical examinations including vision screening and drug testing, psychological test required.Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
