Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary will be determined by factors including scope, complexity, location, candidate qualifications and other employment conditions. Employees are eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our compensation package.

What Is the Opportunity?
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for investigating, evaluating, reserving, negotiating and resolving assigned General Liability Bodily Injury and Property Damage claims. Provides quality claim handling throughout the claim life cycle (customer contacts, coverage, investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, negotiation and resolution) including maintaining full compliance with internal and external quality standards and state-specific regulations. Provides consulting and training resources, and serves as a technical resource to the field and our business partners. This job does not manage staff.
What Will You Do?
- Directly handles assigned severity claims.
- Provides quality customer service and ensures file quality and timely coverage analysis and communication with insured based on policy information and facts or allegations of each case.
- Consults with Manager on use of Claim Coverage Counsel as needed.
- Directly investigates each claim through prompt contact with appropriate parties to determine liability, damages, and contribution potential; interview witnesses and stakeholders as appropriate.
- Complete outside investigation as needed per case specifics.
- Identify and direct internal and external resources for specific activities required to evaluate claims (Subrogation, Risk Control, nurse consultants, investigators, and other experts).
- Verify the nature and extent of injury or property damage by obtaining and reviewing records and documentation.
- Maintain claim files and document activities in accordance with procedures.
- Utilize evaluation tools and diary management to ensure timely handling.
- Establish and maintain proper indemnity and expense reserves.
- Participate in roundtables and presentations to collaborate on technical expertise and improve payout outcomes.
- Share knowledge of resolution techniques to improve claim results.
- Apply company quality management protocols and document any departures from protocols.
- Develop and employ creative resolution strategies.
- Discharge claims promptly within delegated authority; negotiate with insureds or their representatives.
- Identify alternative dispute resolution opportunities when appropriate.
- Manage litigated claims, develop litigation plans with panel counsel, and control legal expenses for effective resolution.
- Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and other legal proceedings as needed.
- Update stakeholders with new facts and implications for liability analysis and settlement options.
- Transfer cases to higher level when severity / complexity warrants.
- Maintain confidentiality of information.
- Support special accounts and respond to inquiries from agents and brokers.
- Position the company as a technical resource in legal proceedings and adhere to professional guidelines and state laws.
- Mentor and coach less experienced claim professionals to build bench strength.
- Collaborate with business partners to achieve quality results.
- Evaluate recovery potential and direct resources to recovery efforts.
- Licensing requirements may apply; obtain and maintain necessary licenses within required timelines and complete continuing education as mandated.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
Bachelor's Degree preferred.4 years bodily injury litigation claim handling experience preferred.Advanced knowledge in coverage, liability and damages analysis; thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant law and expert litigation management skills.Extensive claim and / or legal experience for evaluating severe and complex claims.Ability to make independent decisions on most assigned cases.Strong understanding of products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices.Openness to others' ideas; actively solicits input and shares ideas.Strong customer service, coaching, influence, and communication skills (written and verbal).Strong technology aptitude and attention to detail; ability to use business tools to research, track, and communicate information.Job Specific Technical Competencies : Analytical Thinking, Judgment / Decision Making, Communication, Negotiation (advanced); Insurance Contract Knowledge; Principles of Investigation; Value Determination; Settlement Techniques; Legal Knowledge; Medical Knowledge.What Is a Must Have?
