Key Responsibilities :
- Propulsion System Design : Lead the design and integration of propulsion systems (e.g., electric motors, hybrid systems, or small gas turbines) for Group 2 and 3 UAS, optimizing for efficiency, power-to-weight ratio, and mission endurance.
- Mechanical Design : Develop airframes, structural components, and subsystems, ensuring seamless integration with propulsion systems while meeting weight, balance, and aerodynamic requirements.
- CAD Modeling : Use CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent) to create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D drawings for UAS components, with emphasis on propulsion interfaces and thermal management.
- Analysis and Testing : Conduct structural, thermal, and vibration analyses (FEA / CFD) to validate propulsion and mechanical designs under operational conditions, including high-altitude and extreme environments.
- Prototyping and Integration : Oversee rapid prototyping and fabrication of propulsion and mechanical components, collaborating with manufacturing teams to ensure design-for-manufacturability (DFM).
- Material Selection : Select lightweight, durable materials (e.g., composites, aluminum, titanium) for propulsion and structural components, balancing performance, cost, and production constraints.
- Payload Integration : Design and integrate mission-specific payloads (e.g., EO / IR sensors, communication systems) while ensuring compatibility with propulsion systems and maintaining aerodynamic performance.
- Testing and Validation : Plan and execute ground and flight tests to validate propulsion and mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with MIL-STD, DO-160, or other relevant standards.
- Documentation : Prepare detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports, to support certification and regulatory compliance (e.g., FAA, DoD).
- Collaboration : Work closely with aerodynamics, electrical, and software engineers to ensure integrated system performance, with a focus on propulsion-driven design solutions.
- Continuous Improvement : Identify opportunities for propulsion efficiency, weight reduction, and cost optimization while enhancing overall UAS performance.
