Supervisory Health System Specialist
This position is assigned to the Credentialing and Privileging section, which is under the Chief of Staff service at the Chicago, IL VA Medical Center. This position oversees all functions related to healthcare provider's professional credentials.
Responsibilities include providing consulting and guidance to local leadership and C&P employees on all matters pertaining to the facility's C&P program including Healthcare Professionals' C&P, facility Scope of Practices, National and VISN Memorandums of Understanding, Veterans' Administration Memorandums, VHA requirements, Handbooks, Directives and Policies, TJC Standards, quality assurance assessments, and risk management and malpractice claim action evaluations.
Duties include : serving as the primary consultant for the facility's C&P program; analyzing program audit results, interpreting facility quarterly report card data, researching provider credentialing requirements, identifying potential privileging issues, interpreting and explaining regulatory requirements; coordinating with Service Chiefs and service level administrative teams for annual Committee review of clinical privileges and scope of practice forms; performing as the SME on topics to include credentialing of licensed independent practitioners (LIP) and Non-LIPs; serving as liaison and partner with Human Resources service programs for issues to include onboarding, provider exit reviews and assessments, privileging actions, and guidance related to clinical performance concerns; partnering with the VAMC contracting office to ensure contracts for healthcare providers contain appropriate requirements and oversight related to C&P ensuring quality assurance in the facility's C&P program; validating processes that are working efficiently and identifying dysfunctional process issues; assisting with developing, coordinating and recommending changes for the improvement of workflow in program or section area; performing reporting and data monitoring to include initial and ongoing credentials' training and education, Our Providers' database certifications, VetPro quarterly reports, etc.; serving as the administrator of the National Practitioner Data Bank; serving as the administrator for the Federation of Medical Boards; serving as the administrator for the Our Providers Database; serving as the direct technical and administrative supervisor to employees in the C&P Office; performing other related duties within the C&P program.

Qualifications to qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10 / 27 / 2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement : applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

Basic - Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) : Experience - Positions above GS-5 : Progressively responsible analytical or administrative, or clinical management or supervisory experience in the health care field. This work may have been performed in an operating health care facility or a higher organizational echelon with advisory or directional authority over such facilities. Work must have involved a close working relationship with facility managers and analysis and / or coordination of administrative areas such as budget, personnel, and procurement. In addition to the basic requirement as stated above the following is the experience at the GS-12 grade levels. Specialized Experience : One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health System Specialist (C&P) and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization (GS-11). Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to) : extensive experience and skill in applying pertinent laws, regulations, policies and precedents, accreditation standards and guidelines related to a C&P program; extensive knowledge of medical specialties, medical terminology; skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues or studies concerning the effectiveness of a C&P operation; skill in using software applications such as word processing and data bases and internet database applications for data entry, maintenance and data retrieval and analysis; and ability to communicate in writing to prepare emails, letters, reports and committee minutes.
Preferred Experience : Knowledge of VetPro, Medical Staff Affairs, and Credentialling and Privileging Policies. There is no educational substitution for this position at the GS-12 grade level.
Physical Requirements : The work is mostly sedentary. Occasionally, light physical effort may be required, such as that involved with walking, stair climbing, and carrying of light office items. Working Environment : The work is performed in an office setting which requires normal safety precautions typical for offices and meeting rooms. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work may require travel.
