Chief Finance and Operations Officer responsible for leading finance, operations, risk management, and sustainability to support Mundo Verde’s mission and growth as a bilingual public charter school in Washington, DC.
The Organization
Mundo Verde is Washington, DC’s first “green” public charter school and an Expeditionary Learning Education, language immersion school serving over 1,200 students across two campuses. Our core pillars—bilingualism, hands-on learning, and sustainability—guide our approach, shaping students who generate sustainable solutions. Instruction is in Spanish for PK-kindergarten, with about 50 percent of instruction in grades 1–5 in Spanish. The mission is to foster high levels of academic achievement among a diverse student body and prepare them to be responsible global stewards.
With an Executive Director hired in February 2025 and a forthcoming strategic plan, Mundo Verde is at an inflection point and seeks to build a strong executive team of mission-driven leaders to guide the school’s next phase.
The Opportunity
Mundo Verde seeks a visionary Chief Finance and Operations Officer to help shape the school’s future during a period of growth and transformation. We want a leader who is a strategist, steward of resources, builder, and champion of sustainability who enjoys developing and building capacity in people who love finance and operations. The CFOO will join a dynamic leadership team to design and sustain the financial and operational infrastructure that supports the school’s next era and mission delivery.
What you will accomplish in this role
- Team Leadership : Develop and empower the people who ensure high-quality operations and finance work; be a trusted leader in daily interactions with students and families. Drive growth by ensuring financial strength, operational excellence, and sustainable practices aligned with equity and the mission.
- Finance and Risk Management : Steward resources, strengthen financial health, and position the school for long-term stability.
- Provide strategic financial guidance and analysis to the Executive Director and Board to support data-driven decisions.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial modeling, including capital planning.
- Oversee accounting, treasury, payroll, and financial reporting; ensure compliance with regulations and accounting standards.
- Manage banking, investments, vendor relationships, internal controls, risk management, cybersecurity, and audits.
- Explore innovative funding models; maintain transparent policies and robust internal controls.
- Operations : Ensure smooth daily operations while building systems for growth.
- Oversee facilities, technology, health, safety, and food service; lead capital planning and campus projects.
- Manage procurement and vendor relationships aligned to sustainable operations.
- Ensure optimal use of physical and technological resources; oversee campus security and emergency protocols.
- Collaborate with the Chief Academic Officer on educational technology initiatives.
- Sustainability : Embed sustainability into decision-making; align financial and operational choices with environmental stewardship.
- Develop and implement a vision for sustainable operations; track and report progress.
- Advance initiatives in energy use, waste reduction, procurement, and responsible operations.
- Partner with faculty and students to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.
