The Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) at Kindred Hospital Houston Medical Center is a specialized inpatient rehab program located on the hospital's fourth floor. It's designed for patients recovering from serious conditions like stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, orthopedic trauma, neurological disorders, amputation, or other complex illnesses.

  • Intensive Therapy : Patients receive at least 15 hours of therapy per week, typically spread across five days, under the direction of a physiatrist -a doctor who specializes in rehabilitation medicine.
  • Newly Renovated Facilities : The ARU features 11 private rooms, a modern rehab gym with advanced equipment, and dedicated spaces for dining and activities. Each room includes amenities like Wi-Fi, cable TV, private bathrooms, and guest recliners.
  • Seamless Transition : Because it's located within the hospital, patients can move directly from long-term acute care to rehabilitation without transferring to a different facility.
  • 24 / 7 Nursing Support : Around-the-clock care ensures patients are supported throughout their recovery journey.
  • Evidence-Based Approach : The ARU follows guidelines from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is recommended by the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association for stroke recovery.

How you'll contribute

Evaluates and treats patients per medically prescribed physical therapy plans. Designs and implements individualized programs to restore function, alleviate pain, and prevent disability; provides patient / family education on injury prevention, ergonomics, and rehabilitation. Supervises physical therapist assistants, students, and aides in delivering care.

Essential Functions

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessments of patient condition and functional status.
  • Develops and updates an individualized plan of care in collaboration with the patient, based on goals and capabilities.
  • Plans, prepares, and carries out evidence-based interventions to maintain, improve, or restore function; alleviate pain; and prevent dysfunction.
  • Delivers therapy using standard PT techniques and modalities appropriate to patient age and condition (e.g., moist heat / cold, ultrasound, UV / IR lamps, therapeutic exercise, manual therapy).
  • Administers physical agents and operates PT equipment safely; performs necessary set-up and checks.
  • Evaluates, fits, and adjusts prosthetic and orthotic devices; recommends modifications as needed.
  • Identifies / document goals, anticipated progress, and timelines; plans for reevaluation and discharge.
  • Directs and supervises PTAs, students, and support personnel; delegates tasks appropriately and ensures clear communication.
  • Accurately documents assessments, interventions, patient response, education, and progress toward goals.
  • Participates in performance improvement and continuing education; performs other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications and requirements :

    Education : Bachelor's Degree required (Physical Therapy).

    License : Current Physical Therapy license in state of practice.

    Certifications : BCLS required. Skills : Critical thinking, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in stressful environments. Proficiency in multiple clinical software systems and rapid learning ability. Effective English communication (read, write, speak, and understand). Ability to successfully complete the Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire.
