Overview
Paraeducator / Behavior Interventionist role under the direction of the Coordinator of Special Education. Assists a teacher in providing instruction to behaviorally challenged individuals or small groups, monitors and redirects student behavior, and assists in meeting special needs. This may include activities such as feeding, toileting, administering Intensive Behavior Intervention programs, and related clerical duties.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing instruction to behaviorally challenged individuals or small groups of students. Tutor students as directed by the teacher.
- Administer one-to-one Intensive Behavior Intervention to students in school or home settings; participate in IBI in-services.
- Collect data and maintain anecdotal progress notes and behavioral charting data.
- Monitor and assist special education students in prescribed learning activities; observe and report behavior and progress.
- Provide support to students and parents with appropriate guidance and a positive, respectful attitude.
- Communicate with teachers regarding individual needs and progress; provide input on programs and materials.
- Confer with teachers on programs to meet student needs; ensure health and safety practices and regulations are followed.
- Assist with learning personal hygiene and self-help skills as assigned; support toilet training as needed.
- Prepare instructional materials, administer and score tests and drills; review data and report concerns.
- Administer First Aid and CPR as needed to students with chronic or acute medical conditions.
- Perform clerical duties and direct group activities; participate in meetings and professional development as assigned.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of behavior management techniques for special needs populations and Intensive Behavior Intervention.Understanding of child guidance principles for students with learning disabilities, developmental delays, and autistic behavior.Basic subjects taught in District schools (arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, reading) and appropriate developmental skills.Safe practices in classroom and playground activities; basic instructional methods and techniques; correct English usage and vocabulary.Interpersonal skills, tact, patience, and courtesy; basic record-keeping and health / safety awareness.Ability to implement behavior management techniques and chart behavior; work with instructional activities in a special education environment.Understand the needs of special education students; observe and report behavior according to policies; develop rapport with students with disabilities.Clerical duties, filing, and maintaining records; quick arithmetic calculation ability; follow oral and written instructions.Effective written and oral communication; ability to work cooperatively with others.Education / Training / Required Certification
High school graduate or equivalent.Associate's degree or higher; completed at least two years of higher education.Two years of experience working with children in an organized setting.One year of experience observing and collecting student behavioral charting data preferred.Training in implementing Intensive Behavior Intervention desirable.Physical Demands
